View Full Version : 6 speed transmission
I currently am running a 350/350 combo and I was wanting to put a manual transmission in it. 85 s10. I was thinking of something like a 6 speed from a camaro or something of that nature. Is this a good idea or should I stick with a five speed from something else. But I dont know what. I just was hoping that the six spped would bolt up and it would come close to fitting in the hole in the floor. Thanks

Should be able to get it bolted up one way or another thats for sure...But the BIG problem is, What are you gonna do about your clutch pedal, slave cylander, and what not? thats what i would be worried about more.

You\'ve got to do a ton of mods. Wont\' come close to the hole, making clutch linkage, custom flywheel(depending on year of motor) etc. But, if you know your stuff, its sweet to be banging 6 gears. Runs a good set of gears, and still be turning like 2200 rpm at 65 on the eway.

get a t-5 5 speed out of a camaro. same tranny that came in most older 5 speed s-series trucks, just built stronger. not much stronger, but stronger. you\'ll need a v8 bellhousing, and all the associated clutch stuff. id go out and buy a rotted out truck with a manual tranny to get the pedal setup etc., and just swap everything over, work, but i think its worth it. real men shift their own gears.

\"real men shift their own gears\" LOL. True but also fast cars shift for you.lol

They aren\'t even compareable. And, the T5 from a camaro will cause problems if you are running headers. The slave cylinder is in the way of ALL v8 s-10 headers. The shifter placement is roughly 4-5 inches back from the s-10 position. Have to cut the floor for that one too. You will need to use a s-10 master cylinder and reservoir, and the camaro slave cylinder for the clutch linkage. You will have to make up a line to connect the 2.

the only hard part i see is the headers. anybody can cut a whole in there floor and bend up and flare a line. or, you could be real crazy like me and use a cable and linkage clutch setup. yeah, i know it probably wont work, but its what i have so i am gonna try it for now. experience is the best way to learn.

You might use 305 Camaro exhaust manifolds, they tuck in close to the engine and T-5\'s only came on F-bodies w/ the 305 anyway so I don\'t really see where the issue would be there. They are way more restrictive than headers though. They didn\'t put the T-5 behind the 350 (in the F-bodies) b/c of reliability issues though, would it stand up any better behind your 350?

If you lookin for a 5 speed, the NV 5 speed is an idea. It should be just as strong, if not stronger than a T5. They have the same TQ rating at the 5 speeds in the full size trucks. I hear that the World Class T5\'s are a little bit better than the regular T5\'s.

I\'m gonna use the NV just because of simplicity. Bolting right up and same length and stick position... if you can get ahold of an NV tranny id say it will be 100% more worth it just to use that since both are 5sp but the NV doesnt need all the mods.

in the early/mid 80\'s you could get an f body with a 350/t-5, and the vettes to. if you change the tail piece, and use a ford disc with a chevy pressure plate, you can use one out of a mustang. if you really want to use your long ass shifter, you can. there are three shifter hook up points on t5\'s. i personally am gonna use the camaro setup, cuase it moves the shifter more within reach, and a camaro short throw shifter set up works even better. i did the same thing in my 302/t5 ranger. all that had to be done was cover up the old hole, make a new one, and reverse the shifter handle in the base to clear the bench seat. kinda like what carrol shelby did in the cobra\'s.
Make shure you go with the trany you want wether its a standered or auto.
