but hey i got some spring fever and a real golden opportunity.. and i need some advise. I\'m not sure how many of you remember me, or how many familiar folks are still posting on this site... but basically 2 things happened to my s10 v8 project... 1 no time, and the other no money. I\'m currently going to the University of Northwestern Ohio for a high performance technician associates degree, which means i\'m 3 hours from home and barely make enough money to skimp by. But i fricken love school.. right now i\'m in engine diagnosis and repair, but it\'s basically intro to engine machining which=badass. and to boot, i\'m scheduled for engine machining next session which=badderass. So i\'ll have the chance to machine my own block, and possibly build my own motor by the time i graduate, complete with a dyno tune and a whole lot of valuable experience. I was going to try and get my current engine out of my truck figured out, since it is actually all there and capable of running.. but i\'m so sick of messing with that piece it\'s not even funny. I rebuilt it twice, and had some massive pushrod bendage twice. It would run super for a month or two (driving seldomly) and it would eventually bend pushrods on me somewhere around 6000rpm. The heads were looked at by my machinist at least 4 times... The valves keep sticking.. so i have a clearance problem or lubrication problem.. or??
But the point is that i\'m ready to start over.. I haven\'t decided whether i want to completely tear down this one i got in my truck right now, or just tear the top end off it... or just forget it completely other than the accessories and carb, and start totally fresh with a new motor..
Alright so i have a supposed good 350 block sitting at home that i plan on starting from. I\'d like to go for the gusto on this one since all the machining is completely free and done by me. Step 1 will probably be splaying the mains, boring and honing .030\", decking.. and whatever else i don\'t know about yet. I think this would be the perfect opportunity to build an awesome 383, since the cost of parts isn\'t much different from a 350 if you\'re replacing everything...
So i\'d like to hear some opinions on setup\'s and combo\'s that are fairly cost friendly.. Eagle rotating assembly, RHS heads (i have to discuss this with richard).. 750 speed demon (off my current motor).. is what i\'m thinking at the moment. Deck heights, chamber sizes, cylinder head flow, and the cam will all be figured out as i go through the classes... so this motor could have the potential to be perfectly matched based on Testing, and not guessing like usual.
So just you guys just throw me out some of your favorite parts, combos, possibly prices, etc. Thanks for reading my book =)

you wont get a chance to build your engine till customs. i sugest busting ass in the basic machineing class just to get your shit done. some people have time to get there own block done but most of the machines stay tied up with people that have to test off.
wheres D&R this session? is it still in the 400 building?

welcome back. Glad you\'re enjoying school. I\'d suggest exactly what you\'re thinking... build a bullet-proof 383. I\'m running an eagle forged bottom end in mine, but had some problems with the crank. If I was building another motor, I\'d probably go for a Scat bottom end, simply based on my bad experience with Eagle.
Since you\'re trying to save money, vortec heads with a decent size cam can make HUGE torque on a 383. Otherwise, you can\'t go wrong with AFR heads. Definitely stick with a dual plane manifold, unless you\'re building it for the strip and plan on running it to 7000+ rpm. As for cams, I\'m into solid rollers myself. The extra power, good price and not having to worry as much about valve float outweighs having to lash the valves occasionally, imo.
Good luck.

As far as bending pushrods, are you running guideplates?
What rockers?
Are they the correct length? Theres a ton of factors that can contribute to the correct pushrod length.
Over reving the motor?
Vavle springs matched to the cam? Valve float?

\"Richard\"??? Thats what I used to be called by my parents when I was in trouble....lol
Yeah, make sure you do the align hone and seat/guide machine in machining class ASAP. They are always the ones that get tied up near the end.
Its funny Eagle Crank is in the city I moved to, Southaven, MS.
I did my 400 block in Custom Engines. Put on splayed mains and all that good stuff, but missed out on a bit because I left for a week for the SEMA show. Which ended up getting me my job, which is the Coolest Job Ever!!!! http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif
You should see my flowbench, no reading those sideways scales or calculating anything. I have a SF-1020, the King King of flow benches, I just throw it up and tell it what pressure I want to test at and it goes there automatically. Tell it what range, it adjusts automatically. It just puts up the cfm for me. It rocks...
My SF-902 engine dyno is awesome too, Ive dont a little over 200 pulls on the LS1, written about a 60 page book on all my findings. I just stripped out the crank while installing the balancer during a cam swap, they told me just to tap it for now and they would buy me a new LS1(even though we have another one, haha)
Ive been dynoing more stuff on the chassis dyno. You should see a Ford 5.4L vs a Chevy 5.3L, Not even close!!!! Chevy > Ford... Oh yeah...
You guys have to come to graduation this year...http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_hammer.gif Im the student presenter and I get to tell everyone... \"Follow your dreams, you can achieve your goals. Im living proof, BEEFCAKE...oh sorry I think they want me to leave out the beefcake part....lol http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif
My buddy is getting ready to start college at UNO too, Ive been nagging him since before I started to go. You know how I use Truckman91 on here? Thats his name, I bought him the account and he never used it , so I did.
If you want to see why we like our college so much check out www.unoh.edu/academics/collegetechnologies/degrees/index.php?curriculum=61 (http://www.unoh.edu/academics/collegetechnologies/degrees/index.php?curriculum=61)
Well thats the word from Memphis, its been freaking 90*F here the past few days.

whoa whoa whoa... those 3 new hi-po classes are actually included in the curriculum now?! are you freaking kidding me! faaaantastic! i see theres actually 0 credits for welding so that must still be in the works... but i didn\'t know fabrication was going to be separate from welding.. holy cow. i\'m ecstatic. i thought i was going to have to take those separately.. apparently i didn\'t get that memo =P
so anyways i\'m planning on touring the 600 building on friday sometime, hopefully its open.
D&R has been moved to room 308... which is right across from A/C.. last class on the right by the big door.

ha tour through tomorrow morning. unless you have class?
my buddy\'s gonna bring his roomates duster in to tune on the dyno before this weekends race and i think me and my partner are gonna be ripping the caprice around the lot tuning the F.A.S.T. fuel injection set up.

Great to hear you\'re loving school. I know, what\'s not to love about it.... http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif
......... And hopefully you\'ll get smart enough to get that pushrod thing figured out. Even with the combined knowledge of S10V8, it was still a mystery, right? http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif
And keep studying.... because.....
A long time ago when I was a kid, I was hanging out/working in a hi-perf shop. This really young (15yo?) kid kept coming in asking all kind of dumb questions about building engines........ I guess he paid attention....
