I was thinking about redoing my driveway. I don\'t know much about this stuff so any tips will help. Right now its black and cracked up, so I am guessing this is tarred? What would be the best way to repair this? Also how does this tarred style compare to a cemented style driveway. Also correct me if im wrong when I use the term tarred.

if you\'ve got the money id say go with a concrete drive way. alot better quality. it wont get those marks when you put the jack stands on it. and it will stand up to shit like trans fluid from a leaky trans.

id say your best bet is to call a contractor or someone who\'s experienced in that stuff.

So what is the black stuff they put over the asphalt, thanks for the term. Is it just a sealer that people do each year?

Concrete will last longer and be less maintance. Concrete runs anywhere from $70 - $100 a yard for a 3000 psi mix depending on your location. A yard is actually a cubic yard, 3 ft x 3ft x 3ft square. In the flat figure one yard will cover an area 10 1/2 feet x 10 1/2 feet x 3 inches thick. You will also need some wire mesh, It holds the concrete together and gives it strength when it sets up. Also some 2x4\'s to form the driveway in the shape that you want it.It is not hard to do but I wouldn\'t suggest trying it if you never done any concrete work before. If not done right you end up with a mess. You don\'t want a wavy driveway when you are done or one that cracks and peels away in a couple years. Ask your buddies or co-workers. I am sure someone you know has worked concrete before.

we tried doing the mud cap on our house by ourselves. BAD IDEA. hire a guy to pour the driveway. it will be more than worth it. its not like a car where you can go back and redo shit. once it sets its permanent.

There are a few things to consider for a drive. One is taxes. Some areas will not tax a paved drive, but will a cement drive. Since you are in Michigan, you will like the paved drive because snow and ice will melt quicker.

If I had the extra money, I would go cement. What I have noticed in my area is people will cement half of the drive leading out of the garge then pave the rest to the street.

I agree hire out the concrete pouring, with some reading you can form up the drive yourself, but like has already been said if you mess up and it sets, its too late. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif
