i am buiding a 383 engine to put in my s10, it is bored .40 over, 327 heads, eagle crank rods and pistons. edelbrock performer intake, holley 650 carb. but i am trying to get some reccomendations on what size cam to use. i want to be able to drive it daily, but also something big enough to take to the track if i want. any help would be apprecitated. thanks in advance.

Unless I am mistaken, those are some high compression heads, aren\'t they? Also, they don\'t flow near as well as some modern stuff.

I\'d say that unless you have already bought the parts, get one of the edelbrock or Holley matched systems with cam, heads, and intake. Short of that, I\'d say get a set of Vortecs and the proper intake. One of their cams from the packages will work great.

327 heads on a 383? old style heads aint gonna cut it on that motor.

i do still have the original 350 heads. should i just stick with those. i am not planning on going roller just yet. and i am trying to avoid buying aftermarket heads until later on. thanks for the advice.

Im assuming you have flat top pistons, What yr. casting # are the 350 heads? Are they in good shape? I was going to suggest the vortec heads, BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK,but since you already have the intake id go with the 327 heads w/64cc chambers, and maybe a comp cam 272h ,or 280h,or even the 286h,the last cam would work better with the performer rpm intake..Its got a real good lope to it and at 490 lift you dont have to put screw in studs in....might run a small stall with it..let us know about the 350 head casting #s

with 383 cid, you could go with a 230-236 @ .050 and be completely streetable. if you run 10:1+ compression, you could go bigger and still be completely streetable. the comp cams xe274 would be a good cam for you. xe284 if you want more rumble.

good luck! brick.
