you can go .030 pretty easily. If you go any farther you need to have them also fix the intake side, or your intake bolts wont fit. You might even need to do the intake side at .030

I had heads on a stock Goodwrench 350. After they were milled i had to get my Edelbrock intake milled because the intake would not sit flat up against the block and heads like it originally would. After the intake was also milled, everything fit perfect. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif
.030 seems like quite a lot.Other than the intake will need milled also, what will this do to the pushrod length?Hydraulic lifter plunger can only travel so far, would this bring on valve float sooner?

Actually, you should never mill the intake. That makes the intake only fit those heads, and no others.
The better way is to mill the intake of the heads to even them out so all intakes will fit, and your intake will fit other stuff later.
Milling heads will cause you to have to measure for correct pushrod length and geometry.

exactly right about the milling the intake thing, should always correct the heads for the intake. only exception to this is if the endrails on the intake won\'t clear the endrails on the block, then its ok to mill some off the endrails on the intake, won\'t hurt anything, gonna fill that up with silicon anyway. i think i\'m gonna get em milled between .030 and .040, if the intake won\'t fit, i have access to a bridgeport, i\'ll fix it. would like this motor to have at least 9.4:1, give it a CHANCE to make some power.

I\'ve had .125 milled off a set of bowtie II heads, 462s, 041s, and a set of 993s. I didn\'t have any major problems. Just plan on milling the intake side. Angle milling helps a little and doesn\'t require quite as much milling on the intake side.
How far can you go? Say you start with a 58cc head, what kind of problems could you get into milling them say,.120? Are there race engines that run with 40+cc chambers?

man, thanks for all the good info guys, i really appreciate it. i\'m not worried so much about milling the heads now, i\'ll probably try to take them in tommorow or wednesday. hope it helps the ol suburban pull a little harder once i get it back together.

You better check valve to piston clearance when you cut the heads. Those 49cc heads cut the clearance really close too.
