Fire works are going off all around me.It\'s July 3,about 11:20PM.What is independance day? Firecracker day? Is that all? Does it really have \'any\' significance to our culture other than a day to get drunk and set off firecrackers? Does the orignal meaning even apply now? AND,,,If you say taxes,,,you need to go study some more!

\"On July 4, 1776, we claimed our independence from Britain and Democracy was born.\" If you feel that this is just a day in which to get drunk and blow off fireworks, and you believe as if it has no significance in our culture. Maybe you need to consider being 7000 miles away from the United States, family and friends deployed on a ship (such as myself), land based in Iraq or forward deployed protecting YOUR independence!!!!!!! Apparently you have no clue as to what our jobs are!!!! Every Sailor, Soldier, Airman or Marine who sacrifices their life each and every day will tell you the true meaning of Independence Day!!!! Every day thousands leave their homeland to come to the \"land of the free and the home of the brave\" so they can begin their American Dream. And that my friend is why we protect and serve. Maybe you need to consider this and until then you will probably still not understand the true meaning of INDEPENDENCE DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well said. Amen to that.

I guess that those of us who were born in the USA, and those who emigrated, all need to take a moment to count our blessings that we are citizens of the USA.

....... In fact, the whole free world should also give thanks on this day, because the USA set the standard for, and gave hope for the rest of the world that a free society can flourish.

I hope my favorite film, \"Indepence Day\" is on the tube tonight.... http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif

kreinhederta, you missed the whole point.I am trying to get people to think past the \'celebration\',not scoffing!

Many of the reasons you and I have these freedoms have not been taught in our public schools. The schools center it all around money as the original reason and as an American I personally think that stinks.

If people would do a study of the original intentions as put forth by the founding fathers they would see that money(taxes) was way down the list for reasons why to declare independence. But thanks for the lecture http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

COB, I realized where you were coming from, that you were just trying to evoke those thoughts, and thanks for that. But your note could easily be misconstrued, especially by someone who\'s away from his family, half \'way round the world, sacrificing as we speak. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

The United States of America

\"Kicking @$$ since 1776\"

Just remember what those fireworks signify: the fighting that happened to make this great nation.

COB,

As Scotty stated, your thread could very easily be misconstrued! I agree as for the way things are with the public schools not teaching the \"Pledge of Allegiance\" and just the basic ways of our society sometimes as a whole. As I said before, way to many people do not realize the efforts put forth everyday around the world to maintain our independence and most of all our FREEDOM!!! Best defined by President Reagan in this quote,

\"Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. Those who have known freedom, and then lost it, have never known it again.\"

I hope everyone had a good Independence Day and thanks for the support of our troops!!!!!!!!!
