and i swear everything is hitting... i took the mounts off the engine, i took the starter and bellhousing off.. and i still cant seem to squeeze the 350 in the damn thing...the tranny seems to hit the firewall and the oil pan hits the ....something its caught up on it

and i cant seem to get it to free up?

Any body have any step by step instuctions on what they did? THANKS

Did u massage the lip on the firewall? also- if you are putting motor and trans in as a unit which is best--you need the front of the truck jacked up with the front tires setting on some 8 inch blocks--- and you need the trans to be tilted a lot lower to the ground so when you start to let it down the trans will start to touch the ground-- as it does --and you let the motor down-- it will fall into place. Having the radiator support out of the truck is a big help when installing as a unit I left my starter off till i got the motor on the mounts..good luck

yah the whole front end is off so no rad or fenders, massage the lip? as in hit it with a hammer? also the problem with tilting the trans is when i go to put it in it will get stuck on the crossmember or my dual exaust from my previous engine....gaH! i will try massaging the firewall today though

Yeah, gotta flatten out the lip for sure. Some guys also need to hammer around the dist. area, and plenty of guys need to hammer around the floorpan area under the heater/near the starter for header clearance.

........... Do a search, the hammering or \"massaging\" has been talked about a bunch. I think the \"book\" explains all that as well.

also do i put the passenger side header on after the motor is in? or before, and do i keep my engine block mounts on the engine of take them off? (they seem to snag)

Well i am off to work, i will be back in 4 hours! please give as many suggestions as possible so i can go put the engine in tonight!

Thanks

Can you use a after market oil pan? Tha pan that is on the engine that\'s going in the truck is a 7 litre, wide bottom pan. Should I just put a stocker on or will this one fit?

That is a good question, the one I have is from a trans-am but it is all dented and I was thinking of going to a 7-8 quart pan, will it fit? anyone try messing with this. I am going all stock till i\'m done with the build than i\'ll start messing with changing parts. My first time build also.

Leave dist. out is your truck jacked up? I had to get the bottom of my tires about 15- 18 inches of the ground to install motor and trns as a unit

well its on some wheel stand things.. the ones you just drive up on... maybe i should jack it up higher?

jack it up more---- botom of tires 15--18 inches off ground--- dist out no headers no starter no fuel pump--- trans at at least a 45 degree angle plywood for trans to slide on

dist out? ah my timings all set and everything http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_frown.gif so i will try hammering it a bit more today and then i will take out the dist and the headers and mounts and starter are all off... and i have a piece of plywood only problem is when it slides in wont it get stuck underneath the crossmemeber?

cross member should be off---- just flatten lip on firewall----- is this the exhaust for the original engine? get them off

well the exaust is aftermarket from my v6.... so it aint comin out very easy...

With the cross memeber out it should slide in. Then jack up th back of the tranny, slip the motor mount bolts in and slide the cross member under the back of the tranny.

When I did my 2wd I did have the nose off and the starter out. But I did not take out the distubter. It was a lot of jack the tranns up an inch and lower the motor 1/8 inch. back and forth until it was in.

alright so pounding the firewall seemed to do the trick... and using a piece of wood so the oil pan would slide down thanks! now all i need to do is put on the mounts!

You see? Nothing to it. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif

BTW, don\'t think you\'re the only one who doesn\'t just \"pop it it\". I don\'t know how many times I\'ve heard guys say here on this site \"so today I trial fitted my engine for the 7th time\" ..... etc. etc.

I bet if you would have bought the swap manual you would of had it in the first time. I did!

Mine actually looks and installs like it came from the factory with it. I left mounts, dist, fp all on. Oh and the crossmember HAS to be out...kinda impossible to do it with it in.

Now ive already yanked the motor out and threw in another one. Try bolting the bellhousing up with the tranny and crossmember already in. Its quite fun!
