I\'ve got an 87 std cab s-15 soon to be putting in a 406 . I don\'t think the 7.5 rear will stand up to the task for very long. Called a local junk yard, they have a 7-5/8 out of a 98 blazer 56k mi with a 3.73 gear for $450. Is this a good deal, and is it a direct bolt-in? A buddy of mine has a dana 60 he wants $200, but I don\'t know if I want all of the expense narrowing it. If the 7-5/8 will last, it would definitely be the easier and cheaper deal.

Thanks for any info!

uhhhh.... your truck is a 87 it has a 7.5 inch diff.. the 7 5/8 in my s-10 holds up to the task quite well and i had a 425-450hp engine in it... the only way yoyur guna hurt it is if you have gobs of traction there is guys on the site running the stock read ends that run 12\'s in the 1/4 with slicks.. and yes it\'s a direct bolt in.. either way... if your getting as drum to drum diff it\'s probably the easiest... the pumpkin will bolt in but you need different axels too the 7.5 are 26 spline axels and the 7 5/8 are 28 splie axels... for 450 i woudl hope it\'s a drum to drum diff i got aftermarket gears and a minispol for my stock 7 5/8 for $400 canadian.. and i got a whole drum to drum diff for 50 bucks... and it was like new.. i\'d look aroudn and see if you can find any cheaper than that, but honostly i think even the 7.5 diff will hold up.. the weak part in them is the axels and spider gears the spiders will give out long before the axels though.. put a mini spool in and it shuold hold out no problem (mini spools aren;t near as bad as everyone says on the street mines a daily driver and i donl;t mind it at all i like it it\';s more predictable when you decide to put your foot into it cuz it alwas does the same thing) my freind has the stock diff in his trans am and he\'s got a huge 383 stroker and theire the same diff he runs deep into the 12\'s with slicks and pulls the front wheels about 2 inches off tyhe ground and his hasn\'t broke yet.. so i\'d say it should stand up

shop around somemore to find what u wants!! The stock 7.5 in my truck lasted 3 months then the pinion blew apart and screwed up the ring also but the rest is still good! go figure! but if ya gonna run the 7 5/8 it will hold up to the power of the v-8!

Thanks for the info! I think I\'ll save my cash for now. I thought that price was a bit high, it\'s not like those rears are rare, so I\'ll just run the 7.5 as long as I can.

$450 does sound a little high. I sell them a the yard I work at for around $250 or so. You should be able to find them for less.

I have had a 7 1/2 in mine for 13 years and have never blown it up.

The junk yards around me are expensive as hell, and they quoted me $550 on a bolt in 8.5 inch 10 bolt for an s-10.

This being the case, I\'d say that $450 for a 7 5/8 is way on the high side because an 8.5 inch is alot better of a rear. Someone on the site said that they could get an 8.5 in at their junk yard for about $300 or $400 that would bolt right into an S-10.
