What exactly is a spool? And where do you get one? About how much are they?

There are 2 types of spools. The mini spool and a full spool. The mini just replaces the spider gears and the full spool replaces the entire carrier. They tie the 2 axles togther and have NO slip at all.
Cost varies alot from one company to another.

what he said...
it\'s just a machined peice of steel that the axels slide into.. locks them right solid togather both wheels will turn at the same speed at all time... where with most posi\'s and all open diffs when you go around a corner it allows the tires to turn at different speeds which makes for better drivability and less wear on your back tires... but for a lot of us on here wear on our tires is the last thing were concerened about... i know i\'d rather replace a pair of tires than a differential because the clutches wore out or the spider gears desided they were gunna go through the cover, but if your using it as a daily driver and don;t drag race too often or anything don;t get one... i\'d stick with a posi... but stay away from a factory limited slip... they tend to uhhh lets say, well they might as well be called dynamite when you put any kind of hp to them and are trying to get lots of traction with them they literaly explode, i only paid $45 canadian for my mini spool from a freind, they aren;t really expensive but if you wanna be a really cheap bastard you could just weld your sopider gears togather and it\'ll probably get destroyed in a month...
\"your tranny is slipping\"
\"no dad i\'m pretty sure thats the tires\"
\"wow, thas a lot of smoke\"
\"thats a fun smell\"
the conversation between me and my dad on the way back from the exhaust shop

The rear end i have ( i think ) is a stock 7 5/8 rear end. When i looked in jegs all i saw was mini spools for 7.5 rear ends with 26 spline. Do they round 5/8\" down to 1/2\"?

Just a note about spools ive seen on rare occasions that axles can bind and/or pull out make sure you seat your axle really good and try not to run wide tires..

if the proper c clip eliminator kit isn;t used i\'ve seen axels slide out too... the only time your gunna bind axels that i could think of is if your launching at high rpms with lots of power and getting lots of traction... but if your doin that you should probably be running a different diff than the 7 5/8
and no they don;t round 7 5/8 down to 7 1/2 they are two totally different rear ends (well the ring and pinion are the same) but the axels are different the 758 will have 28 splie axels and the 7 1/2 have 26... so the spool will only work with the proper diff unles you swap axels.. which is a waste of time because the 28 spline axels are stronger anyway....and i\'m nmot even positive the ring and pinion is the same? but it might be... i can\'t remember from when i ordered my gears... i think they were the same...

well im guessin your motor is a 4.3 motor cause there the only ones equipped witht he 5/8 rear end, the difference is the splines in the axle, the 5/8 is a 28 splined, and 26 is on reg v6 and 4cyls..good traction which is what i have is the powertrax no-slip locker...its excellent, i have a 375 hp motor that i hammer on everynow and then and its held up like a champ...powertrax.com or u can get a regular posi...i just got what i think would work, it dis inguages around corners and locks undertorque, and its fun to have on a damp road
