if you ever plan on using a cam with over .500 lift you are going to have to.

they say .550 lift with these springs.

i dont know? i have heard the same thing. but i have a set of .550 lift springs in my \"906\" vortecs and they fit in the bosses fine. my lift on the cam is .442/.465 and i am running 1.6 rockers so that should be close to like .490-.500 i havent ran the motor make since the swap but i have ran it hard and no problems? i did destroy the driveshaft and rear end though http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

While I don\'t have hands on experience with Vortec heads, I was under the impression that the machining of the guide bosses was to keep the retainer from colliding with the boss/guide seal when the lift exceeds .500. ouch. Of course other machining can be done for the head to accept other springs, but that\'d be unrelated to the interference problem.

thats right scotty, i dont care if you have a set of 1.880 roller springs that will handle .900 lift the guide has to be cut down on the head

ok so its not the fitment of the spring. so you think with a .490 lift i will have problems? im getting some work done to then at the 1st of the year anyway but i still like to know.

.480 lift is the max lift without machining if my memory serves me right.

i had a set of vortecs, i had bosses machined for clearance, bosses cut for teflon seals valve spring seats opened up, intake valves opened to 2.02 and exhaust 1.6 with a good set of swirl polished valves, and be sure as hell to remove the pressed in rocker studs and thread them for a good solid stud. With a good size cam you can pull those pressed in studs out. I did most of the work myself, so it didnt cost as much. I never used the heads, but someone bought them from me for 950 bucks with a cam and roller tip rockers. Hes had them for about a year and loves them. I also had them shaved to 62cc to raise compression. By the time you do all this your close to set of edelbrocks etecs or what im using victor jr 23 degree heads. I know my vic\'s flow alot more than vortecs... Check out this website, i used it as a reference vortec heads (http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/techarticles/148_0208_vortec_heads_valve_lift/)

On my vortec heads I juse drove the seals all

the way down and used comp cams beehive

springs and retainers for the lt1. This setup is good for about .550 lift at the valve. the problem with vortec heads and valve lift is that at the factory the valve stem seals where not fully seated and the bulky retainers extend about .1\" below the locks. the beehive spring retainers are flush with the bottom of the locks. Other valve springs should work fine

for additional lift if the retainers dont extend below the locks like the factory retainers. On my engine no machining of the guides was nessesary for a GM hotcam and 1.6 rockers for .525\" lift.

and those guys know what they are talking about. i did months of research before i did anything to my heads. those heads were designed for the factory cam, not hipo cams with large lifts. i am worry wort, but i have built plenty of engines and done alot of work to heads. Knock on wood, i havent messed up yet. You can take a chance and it might work, but what if it doesnt.. Live and learn i guess, but i dont like to waste money on screw ups. Know what you want, do it right from the begining, youre future upgrade will be alot easier and cheaper

i\'ve got a stock set of gm perf. vortecs with only threaded rocker studs put in and new springs, running .462/.469 with zero issues... thing revs to 6k no problem... i\'d read about .475 was the max lift so i went as close to that as i could http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif freaking awsome setup.... just bolting the heads and cam in it got me 60rwhp and 90ftlbs.... and i still have ignition issues and horrible exhaust pipes...

fyi cam i have is a Comp Cams XE262H-10 \"Xtreme Energy\" hydraulic flat tappet cam, comes with springs if you buy the \"kit\" i did that and the springs work well.
