Lately, since so many of the Subaru\'s are running loud soup-can mufflers, it\'s apparent that they have a VERY distictive sound. Distinctive, as in it sounds like an odd-fire engine. And they ALL can\'t have one spark plug wire off! http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif
............. Sort of like a Harley\'s distinctive sound because of it\'s odd-fire engine.
So, is it an odd fire engine, or..........??

I thought it was because they were boxer engines? Never put much thought into it.

Harleys are more because of it being single crank pin, but its basically the same thing. I just thought WRX\'s sounded weird because the run off of rice rather than gasoline. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

It\'s the \"boxer rumble\". Not sure about the odd-fire thing, I think it\'s really just the flat engine layout.... then again porsches H boxer motors dont have the same rumble so may be...

Where the heck is Andy S10rodder... he\'d know.
.......... I didn\'t know the WRX\'s had a flat four. But that should make for a nice, even fire, (every 180 degrees) you\'d think, right??
.......... But every WRX I hear with the loud mufflers sounds like a four or a six with a plug wire off.
........... Regarding the Harleys, Like Mike said, two rods share the same crankpin like a V8. And if it\'s a 45 deg. V-twin, that means that instead of firing 360, 360, 360, 360, etc. Like an even-fire twin, it\'s firing 405, 315, 405, 315, etc. Hence, the odd-fire sound. Sort of like, putt, putt, wait a second, putt, putt.
............ Maybe it\'s the header design on the WRX\'s that make them sound that way???

well, judging by the subaru webpage, they ahve an even fire engine, however, alot of them do come with a dual exhaust....... so my assumption would be maybe the sounn of duals on a 4 cylinder? i personally like the unique sound of it, especially when done right (one of my friends jsut got a dual high flow put on his legacy, sounds very nice, done properly, of course)

I don\'t know what it is, but I can tell an unmodified wrx comming from a mile away. I love that sound. I must also say that I just got dual flowmasters on my s-10 and I am pretty sure I love that v8 rumble just a little more http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif.

in my opinion it still sounds like a subaru. theres some motors that it absoloutely does not matter what you do to it, it still sounds the same. like a mustang. stock exhaust, aftermarket exhaust, no exhaust, open headers. it still sounds like a mustang. subarus are the same way. my parents had 2 back in the day, i had one, my brother has an STi, i know more than a few people who have/had them. every one of em sounds the same. its not necessarily a bad sound, its just how it is.
and yes, its an even fire engine. the firing order is 1-3-2-4. if you stand in front of the car cylinder 1 is on the right front, 3 is behind it. 2 is on the left front and 4 is behind it.
front
2 1
4 3
if you look at it, half the engine fires than the other half fires. thats why it sounds the way it does.
thank god they finally relocated the spare tire.
