Hey guys,
Santa brought me an oil cooler kit for my truck. I could use some ideas for where to mount it and my trans cooler, though.
Right now I\'m running a framerail trans cooler mounted like so:
<hr width='200'><img src='images/jpg.gif'>: <a href="http://s10v8.com/members/Jeffyboy/Trans%20cooler%201.JPG" BORDER="0" target=_blank><font size="-2">image will open in new window</font></a><hr width='200'>
I don\'t think it works well enough for long drives (trans acted funny at the end of some 40+ mile drives on hot days this summer), though, so I\'m going back to my regular cooler. I\'d rather stay away from in front of the rad so I don\'t block airflow. I just got my cooling issues pretty well sorted out. Also, my radiator is in the forward position.
So, now I need to find a place for both coolers that will be effective and look good. If it helps, I have a 10\" electric fan laying around that I\'m not currently using.
Pictures of your setups always help.
Thanks,
Jeff

My radiator is also in the forward position. I put my trans cooler in front of the radiator in the passenger side of the truck. I use a 10 and a 12 in elect. fan. No problems with cooling. Mine are puller fans.

I have the same setup as adh383. works pretty well for me.

Here\'s a little more background:
I did have the trans cooler mounted in front of the rad before but thought it might be restricting airflow to the radiator, which is why I changed to the framerail setup. At the same time, though, I flushed the cooling system, put in water wetter, got ceramic headers, and installed an impeller disk on the water pump. And my cooling issues are better now. However, moving the trans cooler may not have been what made the difference. So, you guys don\'t think the trans cooler would block too much airflow?
Also, the oil cooler is frigging huge. And it\'s painted black, which doesn\'t go with my theme at all, so I don\'t really want it hanging out on the front of the truck. Do you think I\'d be alright mounting a regular trans cooler back in front of the rad and mounting the oil cooler where the trans cooler currently is? I know it can\'t get a lot of airflow through there, but do you think I need to put that little electric fan I have on the oil cooler to get some air moving through it?
Thanks for the help, guys.
Any suggestions are more than welcome!
Jeff
If it were mine id would find me a nice spot under the truck like say in the big area between the transmission and passenger side frame rail or any other place wheres there adequate room. There is no law that says the cooler has to be in the front of the truck. I would mount the transmission cooler to the oil cooler and then mount the fan to both and stick up there.

I wouldn\'t worry about air flow to the oil cooler. After all it doesn\'t have anyting on the oil side right now. So a cooler, even without air flow will be better than what you have now. I would be more concerned about the tranny cooler. Heat is a killer for a tranny. Especially if you have a decent stall, it will heat up quick. I would mount the oil cooler where you like it, but I would try and get as much airflow to the tranny cooler as possible.

If you buy a small fan, you can mount your coolers anywhere just have the fan blowing through the cooler. I have 2 huge trans coolers, in front of the corvette radiator on my 355. It works fine. I also have a radiator fan with shroud from a regal with a 3.8.

if your gonna use a seperate fan for your coolers, a used fan off of a street bike will work great. The one on my zx-7 is about 8 inches in diameter and can be found dirt cheap on ebay.

Where do you mount your coolers?
if we\'re tentin it, it goes right next to the picnic table. if we\'re in a cabin it goes right in front of the door out on the porch
rule #1: the key for the cabin goes in the lock and stays there till we check out. right jimmybeam?

I mounted my big ol tranny cooler in front of the radiator in the forward position.

I didn\'t think of it that way, I guess. Makes sense. I\'ll probably go back to the trans cooler in front of the rad and find a place for the engine oil cooler. Then if I want to later, I can put that fan on it if I think it needs it. I\'m kinda hoping the oil cooler will help keep my truck\'s temperature under control, too. It\'ll stay 190ish on the hottest days as long as I don\'t drive over 60 mph. On a cool day, I can drive as fast as I want and it doesn\'t really heat up. I just want this thing to be reliable on hot days.
Knudson, that might be the biggest trans cooler I\'ve ever seen!
Thanks again, guys.

At one time I had a small cooler w/fan located flat under the truck, about under the driver\'s seat. I used alum. tubing routed down the pass. side frame rail, across at the bottom/rear of the cab, thru the cooler, and back, also going thru the radiator cooler/heater. So when I needed to re-route my exhaust, the damned dooler was in the way, so out it came.
.......... So my point is, I just left the 15 ft.?? of tubing, and never had a problem, trans runs cool. I\'m thinking that the fluid running through all that alum tubing dumps some heat.

I mounted my trans cooler under the deflector plate that prevents the air stream from intering the area behind the grill and passing under the radiator. JM2C http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif
