Can anybody give me some input on running a 9\" ford rear on the street with a minispool installed. Does if effect the handling any? Somebody gave me a 9\" rear with a open diff. and I\'m looking at building a cheap posi. for my latest project. Thanks\' http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

i had a spool before and it grinds the hell out of your tires, parallel parking is hard on truck and turning is not as easy, may be better to power slide around corners with it lol. rain can be dangerous with a spool too.

All depends on how much you drive it on the street and why not just put a full spool in. That\'s my next venture. Dirct drive! Gotta love it.

when you turn a corner the outside tire must spin faster in order to make up for the inreased radious of the turning arch. a limited slip, locker, or open carrier allow the outside tire to speed up, a spool however wont allow this as the 2 axle shafts are mechanically locked together. this will cause the outside tire to scrub (and drag) making the tire either bark or howl (like you are doing a good burnout) depending on sharpness and speed.

backing up is fun as the rearend of the truck will pull straight back instead of turning, turning in the rain is just like turning now and flooring it. good fun.

cops hear the tire howeling and assume you are messing around.

the drawback to a mini-spool is that you are relying on the strength of the cross pin, where as a full spool the ring gear mounts directly to the spool. a minispool is easy to install and you can retain stock c-clip axles if you have them (9 inch doesnt). a full spool requires you to reshim the gearset and use c-clip elimonators if you have a gm, ford or mopar axle (not 9\")

spools, welded spiders (lincoln locker), mini-spools all acomplish the same thing. they allow no moving parts between the axle shafts and carrier.

picture of a minispool installed, there is 1 large solid half connected to each axle, and a large square the fits between the 2 halfs not alowing the 2 to turn at different speeds.

I agree with wild 85 and mrbighsot. The manueverability of the truck decreases, but powersliding is in. Getting your truck sideways on a wet road is almost a given. Oh and your tires on the rear will last~10,000 miles tops.

Oh and on the picture, does the third member have ABS pickup on it? what year S10 or what car?

ford 8.8\" rearend, fullsize bronco. abs would be 1987-1996 standard. explorers always had rear wheel abs standard (91+)

I have a spool im my rear. It doesn\'t bother me a bit, but I only drive on the street about 500 miles a year. Do it, if you don\'t like it your only out $50 and a couple hours.
