got a 66 327 in my old 74 gmc truck--2 bolt main--- when time allows and i get bored-- thinkin about freshening it up. So, while i\'m in there- thought i may as well make her talk a bit. I have a plan but some ideas could make my plan even better--currently has double hump heads-- 3863151 gm camshaft--quadrajet on aluminum performer intake- suggestions ?
First off I am planning on putting one of those cams in my 301 so I have to ask,,,how does it perform? Crane blueprint cam and Clevite sells them but I can\'t find out if the valve open/close rates are as the original 151 cams?
If you want more out of the motor wouldn\'t the 962 cam (L46) add a little more?

That cam is very similar, if not the same as the cam that ADH has right now! That is, the GM \"151\" cam which was the production cam in the 350 HP 327s. A very sweet cam, had that in my original 350 S-10 motor.
I have a question about that cam perhaps someone can answer. Intake closing point of over 80deg. is droping compression pressure and giving a low dynamic ratio if you are running flattops. How is your street performance, low rpm acting? Even with a 11:1 dome I would wind up with low-mid 7: dynamic cr. I am using the KBsilvolite calculator. I was hoping to keep dynamic around 8:0-8:3 but I seriously don\'t know if this is to much for hi-octane pump gas because I have always ran a 6-7 dynamic cr.

Over the years I\'ve had that cam in 2 engines, first was an actual 350 HP 327, and the other was my first S-10 350 engine. BOTH were torque monsters, and unlike some specs, made plenty of power to 6K.
....... The GM Hi Perf cams of that era were designed very differently from what is used these days, so a lot of what we know about today\'s cams might not necessarily apply. Mainly, the very gradual accel. ramps.... \"advertised\" duration is 312, at .050, 222. Wow, thats a long time. So at the valve first opening, it isn\'t opening nearly as rapidly as any of today\'s cams might, hence not as much compression being bled off as we might suspect. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

This cam runs good--- and by the way- its a crane copy of the gm 151--just as sweet- If i had better heads it would show to be an even better cam--L 46 basically the same shaft
Got it. That makes alot of sense. And also,I may be wrong but I thought all those 327/350 HP motors came with 4 speed trans.

Most if not all were 4 speed cars--vettes mostly--- may have been special ordered in novas--chevy 2\'s -- one step above stock in a stall converter is a good thing with this cam

Regarding the trans\' & converters, I can say this:
The first car I had that cam in was my \'66 Chevelle. It bought it as a 6 cylinder 2drHT, so I just bolted the crate 350 HP 327 to the existing 2 spd. PowerGlide, using the 6 cyl. converter. On the street, it could jerk a wheel off the ground on the third bounce, by burping the gas pedal. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif and yeah, I did put in a set of 4.10 gears in it. So I\'m thinking that by using the 6 cyl. converter, it probably was equivalent to using a 2K converter, +/-.
........... The other was the my S-15, with the first 350, w-TH350. I used a TCI? \"Saturday Night Special\" or something like that, rated at like 1800 or 2K, it was a basic converter, cost like $119. That got me consistent 1.8 60 ft. times with that nice, mild motor.
.......... So my point is, those cams have enough bottom end that you don\'t need a crazy converter.

well guys i get 60$ on that cam if any1 is interested http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif thats what they cost me anyway
Clevite also makes this cam #229-1713? So I am assuming that the idle and vac. quality of this cam makes for easy street driving?
Adh383, the camaro websites have alot of ideas for 327\'s but most of them favor this cam with 11:1 CR or the smaller 327/300hp cam for street performance. And you do know chebby made a solid version of this,,,#3849346 that has the same spec\'s but it is now obsolete.
