Any rearend will fit, as long as you have a torch and a tape measure. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif

Any S10 rear will bolt right in, but 2wd, 4wd, and ZR2 are all different lengths. If you get something from around 1990 on up, you\'ll get the somewhat stronger 7 5/8 axle with 28 spline axles. There are also rare 2wd 8.5\" 10 bolts that came behind newer trucks with the 4.3 and a 5 speed, but most of them are 3.08 geared. The 7 5/8 axles can be had with 3.08, 3.42, 3.73, and 4.10 ratios with factory lockers (cheap junk, though) available in the 3.08s and 3.42s. The lower gear ratios came in 4 cylinder trucks mainly.

thanks,I\'m running an inline six so the S10 should hold up awhile.I thought since most of these guys are going to stronger rears that the G80\'s would be plentiful, but I guess not. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

I\'m curious about your inline. I am thinking about going that way with mine. I set my engine way back, and to maintain some space for the driver and passenger foot wells, it might be my only choice.

Be careful with the inline 6, they are known for producing good torque numbers and that is usually what breaks rearends. JM2C Good Luck and let us know how it turns out. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif

In the newer trucks, are the 4 cylinder rearends the same (besides gear ratio) as the 6 cylinders?

Yup - except that as far as I know, you can\'t get factory posi in one of the 4 cyl rears

Not a lot of options because the s-10 is so narrow. i guess there are a few ford 9\'s from early broncos that are about the right width, good luck finding one. next best guess is an s-10 8.5 or just lay down some bucks and have a nice 9\'er or 12bolt narrowed

Have a chance to get a rearend out of a \'88 Trans-Am 4:11 gears Positrac with disc brakes intact. I know it will need to be shortened. The disc brakes would be nice. Cost effective? Any thoughts on install.
