So, I just bought a 1990 S10 2wd shorty with a 500 horse 350. It is absolutely scary to drive. Can anyone tell me how many splines the axles are with me having to tear it down? The previous owner said it was stock. I need to put a spool in it badly!

should be 28 spline for that year, unless of course someone has changed out the rear end for an older one. In which case, it could be 26 spline.
Someone else correct me if I am wrong here.

dont put a spool in it if you truly have 500 hp because it probably wont last. Invest the $$$ in a different rear end like, Gm 8.5, ford 8.8, or ford 9 inch, they will be able to take the abuse better.

yeah i guess it\'s supposed to be a 28 spline in the 89 and newer trucks.. but i have a 91 and found out i had 26 spline axles. tore apart a \"spare\" rear a guy gave me with the truck i bought... thought maybe the spare was the trashed original rear out of my truck and would have 28 spline axles... nope, 26 again. soooo if i were you, i would pull out an axle to see what i had for sure before buying anything.

A spool might not be such a good idea for the street. You will have issues when turning corners. Plus the extra stress appilied to the axel shafts that aren\'t that strong to begin with. If you really plan on beating the hill out of it than I\'d suggest spending your loot on a stronger rear.
The 7.5 will handle some abuse. It could break when you least expect it.
I had a lincoln locker in mine. Worked great. Every corner I made i could do donuts no-problem. Easiest U-turns I could ever make.
Space.

Today at work we had a 02 extreme s-10 come in on a flat bed.(bone stock) younger driver. It had factory 28 spline axles and a gm style limited slip diff. The problem was that he either broke the center pin or a spider gear, was hard to tell from all the carnage inside, (broken pieces everywhere) His axles were sliding out of the housing, it was real real bad. all this from a stock 4.3 engine. Kinda makes you realise how unpredicable these 7.5\'s are.
