hey guys, i was wondering what if any mods are required to fit a 97\' 4x4 disc brake posi rear under my 98\' 2wd truck. the rear isn\'t from a zr2, just an ordanary 4x4. i\'m not sure if the rear is 7.5 or 8.5, but the guy at the junkyard said that he thinks it has a locker but not sure though. he\'ll pull it out for me and is only going to cost me $350 total for the whole thing. i just hope it will work for my application easily???

different backspacing on the 4x4, the axle is a bit wider..... dont remember by how much though

well that\'s fine, i\'m going to be running the zr1 camaro wheels too. so with this rear, i won\'t need the 2\" spacers. i\'ll have to go pick it up saturday in gulfport,ms- that\'s about an 1 1/2 hour drive from my house, that\'s why i want to find out as much info about the rear as i can.

The 4x4 rear will be about 4\" wider total, which is about 2\" per side. Other than that, everything should be the same (so long as it\'s not a ZR2)

so, as for the leaf spring mounts and the brake lines mostly , it\'s a \"bolt in\" job right?

also, the guy wasn\'t sure if it has a locker or not, but he thinks that it does. how do i tell if it does when i look at the rear. if it doesn\'t i don\'t see paying $350 for it would be that great of a deal??? or would that still be a fair price?

do it. even if its not a posi you still have the 2.2 under the hood so its not like you NEED the posi. and it has disc brakes so even a conversion kit for rear discs would cost you more then $350. so for a rear that has stock discs that will alow you to run the ZR1s in the rear with no spacer and have a decent gear (like most 4x4s) its well worth the $350.

is there a way to look and find out if it has a locker. it stiil is in the vehicle, but just want a second way to tell in case i can\'t read the rpo code sticker

jack up the rear and spin the tires forward. if the other tire doesnt spin or spins in the opposite direction then its an open diff. if they spin the same direction then its a posi. or take the rear cover off and take a look. if its full of mech parts or has 4 springs in the center its either a locker or limited slip posi. if you just see 4 gears 2 side 2 top then its and open diff.

Actually the problem with the s-10 posi is that it\'s a posi-loc so its not going to lock the rear axles together until there is a certain difference in speed between the two tires... i think its either 100 or 300 rpm. That\'s unless they changed to a clutch or cone style in the newer s-10\'s... which they could have but didnt think so.

in that case the only way to really know is to pop the diff case off and look inside or find the RPO option code sticker in the glove box that would say. unfortunately gm did not tag the diff for posi or gear information

well, i got the rear end yesturday. it\'s actually still under a 98\' blazer in gulfport ms.it has disc brakes and seems to be in great shape too! but i blew my tranny about 3 miles from the junkyard i was heading to. it sounded like i toke EVERY gear out the tranny, put them on a coat hanger, and drugged them down the interstate next to me. i was able to drive it only in second gear the rest of the way (lotsa noise) and i had to leave it out in gulfport (96 miles from my driveway to their\'s). thankfully my wife\'s friend came picked us up, i my buddy (who own\'s the junkyard) will tow my truck back to my house in a day or two.my wife and me were stranded out there for about 6 hrs though, but i could hear the races gouing on nearby, damn them boys are running strong!

the rear end will fit under your truck fine, but the zr1 wheels will still need a spacer. i have a zr2 s10 rearend in my truck with zr1 camaro wheels and it fits with no spacer so you will still need some kind of spacer. im not sure what mm offset i used but they were the 17x9.5 and they fit flush with the bed sides. had to use like a 1.75 inch spacer on the fronts but it still rubs a little lock to lock. hope that helps you. good luck. smooth.
