I\'ve got a problem that I was wondering if anyone knew anything about....

When driving for long periods of time or once the engine has heated up, my truck seems to surge after I get past 55 m.p.h.. But it only does it when accelerating quickly. If I accelerate gradually very slowly it won\'t surge. If I don\'t it sounds like it\'s not getting any gas in-between surges.

Has anyone had this problem? Could it be my 700-r? Any ideas on what it could be? Any help would ge greatly appreciated..

Thanks

mechanical fuel pump? thats the first thing i\'d check, it\'s either that or the excelorator pump could be going bad in the carb but the fuel pump sounds more likely, mine di this too, and after a while it started to bog down at higher rpm\'s for the cost of a new fuel pump ($25 canadian) it would be my first bet (and even if it\'s new beleive me they can go bad very quick), you could asl be undercarbed, rev the gnien to about 3500rpm in 1st gear when driving down the street and hold it there and seeif it surges,if so either you could be undercarbed or your mixture screws need to be adjusted

i\'m thinking vapor lock, where are your fuel line run? are they close to the exhaust or right on the block. Just something to check.

On the way home from work/school today I stop at a light and when the light turned green I accelerated normally, but as soon as I got to those high 50\'s BAM!! The engine died. So I pulled over, stuck it in park, cranked it and it started right up. I had no problems at all the rest of the way home.

Any ideas? I\'m still trying to get some advice because I really don\'t feel like taking the bed off again to look at the fuel pump. Ya know what I mean?

what\'s the history o the all the fuel filter look like... what the history on the carb?do you have fuel filers inside the carb?

I\'m thinking along the lines of Stenaholic. I had junk in my gas tank once and it acted the exact same way. (not an S10) I just blew the lines out w/ air and cleaned the gas tank.

Well, I had an edelbrock performer on it, but I took it off because I needed different jets. So I then put the original quadrajet back on that came with the engine when I purchased it. The quadrajet was computer controlled, now it\'s not, but I\'m not sure if that matters or not. I\'ve had the carb on there for a while and I just started having problems this week.

Yes the fuel filter is inside the carb...

If it\'s the quadrajet I\'m just going to put the edelbrock back on without the proper jets.

If it\'s a Q-jet then check the accelerator pump. They are common to go because of their design. They also are the reason that they perform so well on the street so you have to compromise, but check it out. I used to rebuild my q-jets on the kitchen table in like half an hour.

You\'re a little quicker than I was at that but I used the same place! If the QJ has been sitting for any length of time the pump will dry out and not work correctly. They use to make the pump out of leather... don\'t know if the newer ones are tho. I betcha if ya call Edelbrock; they will supply you with correct jets.

Here is what was wrong with it......

The Quadrajet Carb\'s fuel filter was so old and clogged that I couldn\'t even blow air through it. So I took it out and ran without it. It runs perfect. If anyone has the same issues, just do the same. Don\'t forget to put a new one in though.. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks for the help guys...

I had a similar problem, as the engine got warmer the fuel pressure got worse, the pressure was 2 lbs, so I replaced the fuel pump, and it is good now.
