The 1982 S-10 I just purchased off ebay ( neveragain ) has a rodchestor quadrabog from the mid 80\'s that will not idle or choke properly. I want to replace it with a new 600 to 650 size carb but I do not have any idea which is best. It already has a nice chromey aluminum dual plane intake. I cannot find a name on it. The seller tells me when I am there to pick up the truck about the truck having been stolen and the carb was missing and the column destroyed ( another issue I am dealing with ). He stuck on the rodchestor to sell it.

Is the intake a spread bore intake?

I don\'t know the differance, reading up, all the rodchestors were spread bore. I am guessing the shape of the intake manifold opening is what your refering to. Summit which is right down the street sells adapters to go from square to spread and otherwise. I am just curious if edelbrock, or holley, or demon....etc is better than the other.

Demon carbs are great. They have a Guide (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=013&sspagename=STRK%3AME WA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=230115574419&rd=1&rd=1) to help chose which one to get. They come with more features than the others mentioned. The guide will put you very close to the jetting for your application. The others are cheaper, but have problems. Edelbrock comes too rich and not very tunable. Holleys have their power valve problems and anything else you can throw at it. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

you can ask 5 different people and get a different answer from all. if it was my truck, i would put a 1850 holley or a 3310 if you think the motor is up to the task.

Presuming you\'ve got a spreadbore manifold:
Does anyone have any experience with the spreadbore adapters? I\'m thinking, without experience, that they\'re bullshit?
......... So if the adapters aren\'t any good, you\'re stuck with either replacing the manifold AND carb, or getting another Spreadbore. (or rebuilding the carb you\'ve got) If you can get a decent rebuilt Q-Jet for cheap, that might be the way to go. Didn\'t Holley make a spreadbore replacement carb?
.......... Nobody seems to think much of the Q-Jets, but a while back, some guys had a lot of success with them. I think the biggest problem with them was that they were \"different\". The early ones also had a little leak problem that could be fixed with a little epoxy.

Yeah, I\'m a Holley guy. But check out this article I just dug up regarding Q-Jets.
PITA Q-Jets or good carb? (http://www.carcraft.com/howto/57178/)
Frankly, I didn\'t read it myself. Probably goes into how they are good carbs, just \"different\" and scares everyone away. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif

i guess everyone has there own likes/dislikes about different carbs.ive had good luck with both holley, and demon carbs, but a good friend of mine has changed out all of his carbs on his three hotrods to PROFORM,and has had great results.the next one i buy new will be a PROFORM.

I\'ve probably said this a dozen times on this BB:
The best carb is the one you\'re most familiar with. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif
A long while back, I knew Q-jets. Now I know Holleys, forgot all I know about the Q-jets. Even threw away my collection of jets, metering rods and hangers. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

I have a quadrajet carb on my 74 gmc truck--327- It has been on there for about 10 years-- tricked it a bit back then and it runs excellent. As far as the adapters-- they will work-- but not for performance . I would get a dual plane intake for a holley--650 or maybe a spread bore holley--- $$$$$

Holley made 2 different spread boar carbs, the 4165 and the 4175. I found a 4165 for ten bucks at a garage sale, bought a Trick Kit from Summit for thirty, and spent an afternoon rebuilding it. Now I\'ve got a direct replacement for my Q-junk. I even think that when Holley designed the carb they made it so that all of the fuel and vacuum lines would hook up in the same Q-jet locations. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

I agree about the holley spreadbores, but only for a street motor. they don\'t work at the track so you can buy them cheap at swap meets.
and the edelbrock/carter carbs work fine if you buy the tuning kit and read the plugs a few times. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

I\'ve used the Holley spreadbore a couple of times. Very reliable and easy to tune on a Daily Driver. Don\'t waste your money on the carb adapters. I\'ve used the Mr. Gasket adapter twice. Both times experience vacuum leaks. Difficult to keep the combo tight over time, mainly because of the cheap hardware.

I run a Holley 650 Double Pumper on mine, which i really like. Personally if you are not looking for performance i like Edelbrock carbs because of the ease of tuning and reliability. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif
