I\'ve been searching thru the forum, but I would like to start this thread for the 200th time or so. I have an 85 short box I\'m starting my 2nd v8 conversion, I do not want to swap rears. I do not want to narrow a 9 inch, I do not want an 8.8 out of an explorer. I want to keep this as low budget as it can get, this hopefully will become my daily driver. I want to know how you guys who built your 7.5\'s, if your satisfied with them and parts and prices. thanx in advance. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

Well since you have made your decision--- just put a posi unit in that rear and maybe it will live for awhile

The Parts section here has gears and posi units the last time I looked. If not search Ebay. You could get a decent set for a good price. Then you install them yourself. Its not hard, besides most repair shops won\'t install used parts.

i see the \"BUDGET\" aspect to your build i have seen 7.5s last for a while but safe is better so what if it costs a few more bux!

I still run the 7.5 that was in my \'85. I did put in a zexel-torsen posi from an F-body which necessitated upgrading to 28 spline axles. It\'s held up fine and my truck should be making around 400 horsepower. The secret in my opinion: I\'ve never once used slicks. Just street tires.

thats what i say. up grade to limited slip not a G80 locker go with 28 splines and a set of moser axles for around 240 for the set. you might have about 500-600 in the rear but its alot stronger then it was stock??

I picked up a set of GM 4.10\'s and a mini spool from Ebay for $140, put them in my self. I\'m still using stock axles running in the mid 11\'s, not sure how long it\'ll last but I\'ll only be out $200. If your truck is mostly street with a little track time, no sense in spending a bunch of money on a beefy rearend.

after racing f-bodies for 17 years i will tell you this the axles and the posi unit are not the main problem here, its the small ring gear 7.5 or the 7-5/8 it cant take the abuse,if my z28 can destroy the teeth with 280 rwhp what does that tell you!8.5 from a 74-81z28 fits with the spring pearches moved in 1/2\'\' each side and using 4th gen f-body wheels or atleast the backspacing of one out back is the way,or just as mentionrd before NEVER run a sticky tire

Weld the axel tubes to the housing and put on a bearing support housing cover and it will last forever unless you start running slicks. Then you have to change ring and pinion every so often. It is VERY important to weld the tubes. What gives in most cases is the spot weld from the factory. Then the housing turns up and can destroy the whole back end of the vehicle.

The only thing that scares me about the 7.5 is that every time I see someone break one, the axles come out and you either go for a wild ride or hit a wall or another car. C-clip eliminators are always a good idea, as well as a posi, and upgraded axles, but by the time you purchase and install all of those parts you have more money into your 7.5 than it would have cost to just buy a much better rear. As you will see, some people have luck with their 7.5's but i never had the nerve to push the chances

Like rudedogg said the problem is the ring gear.
I installed a Eaton posi, new 3.73 ring & pinion, all new bearings. Mine has been in a year, less than 10,000 miles. Made 1 pass at the drag strip, maybe 6 burnouts from a slow roll on street tires (315 x 35 x 17) and just yesterday had to replace everything but the posi unit. I'm looking for a 8.5

I ran mine well into the 12's with stock axles. I know a guy who ran his Z28 into the high 10's in a built one. They can be used with some success, but dont be at all suprised if it does break.

for your application the 7.5 will be fine. dont do any netrual drops ect. and you will be fine.
i made over 300 passes on mine with slicks, running mid 7 sec passes(1/8 mile).

i was going to upgrade my 7.5 but why bother i could get a ford 8.8 with disk brakes and it already has limited slip posi and get it shortend for all under 500$. the ford 8.8 comes with 3.55 3.73 or 4.11 which are awsome gears, its just as strong as the chevy 12 bolt ...
just my 2 cents

I got the auburn style posi on ebay for less than $75. Played the game for a while. Everything else is stock. Running with slicks since May..... .....sofarsogood. Looking for a 8.5 to have ready when mine explodes. twisi, I'm only out the $75.
