First day on the road today sounds great and its running pretty good, but heading back to my house after a little car meet i gave it some gas and a bearing managed to pop off the ujoint and made the drive shaft hit the ground over and over , soo my friends brough me some new bearings and i put the driveshaft back in but now i have lots of vibrations, do you think the driveshaft became unbalanced? Also my floor on the passenger side gets reallly hot from the headers and the engine is all the way forward.... is there some sort of flame proof carpet liner i can put on the floor there?
Thanks

Bikerboy, couple things to check. It is possible the driveline is slightly bent or unbalanced. The source of your problem may be with pinion angle? Your truck is low and lots of modifications done to the suspension. Have you looked at the rear yoke or angle while at drive height? You do have bags, don\'t you? I am having the same vibration due to bad pinion angle. I used 4\" straight cut lowering blocks. Drive shaft didn\'t like it. Changing the blocks to lowered leafs. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

yah it didnt make the vibrations before it broke though haha, and i tried driving all the way up and then really low and nothing seemed to stop the vibrations, i think i might have to bring my truck to a driveshaft place and get them to set me up with one that will work properly..

Thats good news, just have the shop check for straightness and balance. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

Dynomat certainly can\'t hurt, but I\'d look into trying to deflect some of the heat before it got to to floor. How about a heat shield between the exhaust and the floor, sort of like what they put over some converters? Just a sheet of aluminum spaced off the floor or exhaust. It shouldn\'t touch either.
.............. How about this: take 2 muffler clamps, and clamp them on the pipe at each end of the affected area, with the nuts facing up. Get 4 3/8\" rod couplings, and screw them onto the clamps. This might give you enough spacing off the pipe, yet still not touching the floor. Get a sheet of light aluminum or steel, 2 ft. X 6\", or whatever you need. Punch 4 holes to line up with the clamps, bolt it up. That should help some.
................. Or, same as above, but make 4 new U-bolts out of smaller threaded rod, 1/4\" or 5/16\" so it\'s easy to bend, and skip the rod couplings. With the longer U-bolts, it might be easier to attach the nuts on the top side of the shield if you leave the clamp nuts loose until last. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

Scotty\'s idea would work-but there is a simpler
way-just use the commonly available header wrap-from cool-tec.I have it on my truck-headers back all the way under the cab.Keeps heat in the tubes, increases the \"scavanging effect\" to make your exhaust more effiecent.

i dont want to wrap my headers though... its right where the exast joins to headers thats the closest area to my floor, i might try scottys idea i will take a look and see if i have room to stick my hand in there and rig that up

It too late now, but I covered the underside of the doghouse with cool-tec prior to installing the engine to keep heat out. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

pulled my driveshaft out today and replaced the ujoint, drives a bit smoother but i think it could still use a balance, also there is a bit of dent on the driveshaft from hitting the ground....

Bikerboy, I was afaid that would happen with the stock thin wall tubing. A balance job is a band aid. This incident shows what you realy have. The best question is, how long will it last? You should look into a newer, stronger shaft.

haha yah probably a good idea if i plan on racing in the summer....i\'ll just suffer with the vibrations for now untill i can afford a new shaft
