Crate motor ???s

A friend of mine gave me his \'97 Grand AM for free because the engine was blown. The car\'s in decent shape with 115,000 miles on it. I decided that to drop a brand new engine in it and keep it at least through college. The motor should be here tomorrow or Friday. I\'m planning on putting in a new water pump and maybe a new oil pump while I get the engine out to make it more reliable and save the hassle of digging it apart again later. Is there anything else I should consider replacing while I got it out?

What engine size? Is the engine new/crate or is it a used engine? There are some critical choices depending on the engine type.

it's a 3.1. I ordered it through Autozone, there's a core charge, so I think it's a rebuilt long block, but it's got a 3 year warranty. It comes w/ a gasket kit and I think I'll replace all the accessories so runs for frickin forever.
