on my budget build, I cant afford to do both a stroker motor and a good set of heads. Its going to be either or. But no matter what, I am getting new heads. The question is do I get cheaper heads and stroke the motor or leave it a 350 and get some good heads?
which would you prefer: 1) 350 with either a set of AFR, Dart, Brodix, RHS aluminum heads.
or
2) 383 and either vortecs or patriot heads.
Im wanting around 400 or 425 hp at the crank. going to be a weekend only truck, not many miles a year, mostly street, limited track. pretty reliable motor. Please help guys
oh yeah, if it helps. automatic with 3.42 gears

Well since i'm bored- I'll start the arguing!!LOL
You say mostly street-so I say 383 w/vortecs
383 make more torque,and it's max horsepower
at 5800-6200 rpm. The 355 w/better heads will rev a little further(6300-6800),depending o your set-up,but will only be realized at the track.LET THE SPARKS FLY ON THIS QUESTION

Well thats just up to you. 400-425 hp is no problem for a 350. On the other hand a 383 will make some nice torque without a real expensive set of heads. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif Not much help, huh??

383 would do this easiest.

stroke it---- always start from the bottom up

383 all the way. It's way easier if you decide to add to your build to change a set of heads rather than rebuild the whole motor

383 with Vortecs is the way to go. The trans may not last long with the torque. It sould hold up for a while if you don't dog it all the time.

I think it was Grim, the one with the lwb red s10, said the Vortecs flowed better the bowties up to 500 lift. It should with the right gear and if you can get it to the ground, run 12.10 to 12.40.

well, I believe it will be 383 then. Works for me. thanks for the input.
to add to the questions, for 425hp, would I need forged pistons or crank?

I know how it is to be on a budget. Without trying to start anything. is there a possibility that you would concider going to a 400 CID? No replacement for displacement. Vortec heads can be worked real nice.
do you plan on any Nitrous on this engine? I always suggest forged pistons. I wouldalso look at what your pin height. That will dictate the piston thickness. and would let you know how much nitrous you could spay safely, if you wish to go that way.

id rather stay clear of the 400, ive already got a few 350 blocks. I looked awhile back for one and couldnt find one easily for cheap enough. So Id rather just stay with a 350
probably no nitrous, not going to be racing that much. no need for it on the street.

I would assume that your budjet isn't all that important as you sad you were going to buy a new set of heads no matter what decision is made.
My reply is...
You want a 383. So build it. You could build a bottom end like a rock, toss a 'junk' set of heads on and the 383 will still out power the the 350. Then when your funds are more avalible, in the future, buy a good set of alluminum heads.
My 2 cents... for what its worth!
Space...
One thing to think about though... It doesn't matter how much power you can make if you can't put it to the ground.
Food for thought!!!

i dont know that you would NEED forged internals. but if its in the budget then its not even a question. its insurance if nothing else.

how much of a budget. I know a few motors that were built tuff for around 3 grand. 1300 was in the rotating assembly. If it were mine id build a 5.7 rod 383 with a scat, eagle, or compstar rotating assembly. add your vortecs, hydraulic roller cam, and spray the eyes out that thing. 425hp...pfftt id shoot for 725hp!
