stock guage and mech fuel pump

I'm using a mechanical fuel pump and just unpluged the connector to the stock electric fuel pump and now my gas gauge doesnt work. How do I get the fuel guage to work. The connector has two wires one red and one tan.

plug the pump back in and unplug the fuel pump relay that is located on the drivers side inner fender. Thats what I did and my fuel guage works fine and my truck is an 86
