Hey all- when i originally put my 700r4 in(from an 85 suburban)i wasnt really aware that there were different tailshaft lengths available in the 700r4 and now that the tranny is shot, (its slipping in everygear when i try to giv er')i was wondering if the next tranny i get has a different shaft length can i just swap it out with the one from the old tranny and if so is it a big job?-ive never had a tranny apart except for the pan of course

OK, here we go. The 700R4 from the 85 donor is the same length as other 700R4s. The only thing different is 2wd vs 4wd adapters on the trans to create a difference in length. If your speedo was close or calirated, pull the drive gear and driven gear from the tail. The driven gear is what is attached to the speedo cable. The drive gear is on the output shaft and drives the driven gear. The two workin together will keep things the same on the next trans. The tailshaft housing has 4 bolts and the speedo adapter has one bolt. Remove the speedo adapter, than remove the tail housing. The drive gear is held in place with a clip. The clip has to be pushed toward the output shaft to release the gear. If you use this older trans as a core, you will be glad you removed these. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

Stay away from the 82-84 era. Original trans had cheap parts and didn't last long. If those years were rebuilt, no problem. The other thing is the input shaft was a 27 spline vs the newer 30 spline for that era. The 700R4 went til about 93 I think. The other thing to watch on the early 90s was when GM emplimented the VSS. The VSS and electronic speedos cam in before the 4L60E.
