700-R4 console shifter question

I have a '86 blazer with a newer body style ('96ish) center console and a 700-R4 trans I have all the mounting hardware from the 4l60 for the shift linkage on my 700-R4 but the shifter won't go into 1st??? anybody know whats happening here?

first 2 thoughts are the cable is too short or the console is getting in the way of the shifter.

good thoughts but everything (mounting hardware, shifter cable, shifter, brackets on the 700-R4, and center console which matches the shifter) are all stuff pulled straight off a 97-98ish blazer which had a 4l60e... a 4l60E is the same thing as a 700-R4 with a few upgrades and different (electronically controlled) valve body right??? so what gives everything should line up i would think
