Sounds like somethgns plugged. I have seen guys put new rads in cars with the plastic debris caps in the holes of the rad.

You can fill the system with fluid, start it up and the coolant won't circulate it will overheat.

Not saying thats the problem though. Wth the limited info you gave that was my 1st thought.

Space.

with the motor cold, open the rad cap, leave open and start the motor. what happens?

like mike said, what radiator, what pump, what fan, fan size, thermostat, shroud no shroud, etc. etc.

Sticky thermostat-- bad water pump-- radiator stopped up got to be one of the three---- take thermostat out-- see what it does

Question: Did you feel the upper hose to see if the thermostat opened, it should get real hot when it does?

I just changed my cooling system for the third time and I had a brand new Stant 195 thermostat in the outlet housing for the first test, I ran the engine till it reached 260 degrees and pegged the temp gauge real quick in my 355 V8 87 S10 pickup, the thermostat never opened and the upper hose was cool, granted the coolant was not totaly full yet but the temp sender is right next to my thermostat and getting a good bath of hot coolant so I can't believe it was just a steam pocket... Just beware of brand new faulty thermostats... I put in an AC Delco 160 with an 1/8" steam hole and it's working fine now... http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

Could be a reverse rotation water pump, not turning the right direction. When I did my first V8 swap, we used different belt set up, had the same problem. Changed the water pump to an old style and fixxed problem.
