will a rear end with posi from a early modle 4x4 fit under a early modle 2x4 and how hp can they handle. If the axle itself is too long could you just use the carrier, ring and pinion

It\'ll bolt in it will just be too wide and your tires will stick out unless you have big offset rims.

Yes the axles are about 2 1/2 inches wider on the 4x4 than the 2wd. You can use the carrier form the 4x4 if you would like. I\'m guessing that the 4x4 is a posi?

Get a 8.5\" rear axle out of a late model s-series 2wd 4.3 5-speed. These are sometimes hard to find, but it will bolt right in. Contrary to popular belief they do exist in S-10\'s.

Here is a 2002 model 2wd with a factory 8.5\".

no s-10 i\'ve ever seen has a 8\" i\'ve seen a 8.5\" 7.625, and 7.5 but i\'ve never seen a 8\" so either you have the only 8\" rear end ever made by gm, or it\'s actually a 7.625, the 7.625 ring gear is the same as a 7.5 ring gear, same part numbers even, come to think of it i\'ve never seen a 8\" chevy 10 bolt anywhere? in anything, i\'ve seen a 8.2\" but never a 8\" the 8\" is a ford diff so if i were you i\'d do some checking on what you actuallyhave, and i\'m sure you\'ll find out that it\'s a 7.625, i have a 7.625 and absalutely no problems, the 4x4 carrier will bolt right in and the ring gear will swap over directly too, there is no difference http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif
