what determines the diameter balancer needed? I\'m seeing where the engine i have has both the 6 3/4\" and 8\" listed. 79 350 4bolt main 9.5 to 1.

It doesn\'t really matter as long as its a internal balance damper.. 4 bolt main engines came with 8\" balancers though.

Your water pump plays a factor in it too. An 8\'\' will hit the bottom of some water pumps. Where a 6\'\' wont.

Just make sure it is NOT a 400 balancer

You sure about the 8\" thing? I have a \'79 that was given to me. I\'ll be putting it in soon. btw, the weind team G clears by 1/16\", not enough. Casting # says 2 bolt.

4 bolts came from the factory with a 8\" balancer, but that doesn\'t mean that somebody couldn\'t replace it with a 305 balancer or whatever...alot can happen in 20 years. Since all internal balance balancers are interchangeable the size is not a real reliable way of identifying engines.
