View Full Version : Does the axle have to be ABOVE the spring?

I am working out the plans for 94 4dr Blazer. I am putting a mild V8 in with an OD auto. I want to give it a sort of ZR2 look on a 4dr (something I think GM never did).
Anyway, I was looking at the rear leaf springs while I was considering the add-a-leaf setup, and I was wondering if I could gain an easy 3-4 inches just by switching the axle so it was BELOW the spring instead of above it, the way it comes from the factory.
Other than the obvious bracket/mount issues that will have to be modified, is there a reason that this can\'t be done?
Thanks in advance!

i would think it is possible but you\'d have to make the perches on the top of the axle housing also you might want to get shims so you dont go through u-joints like a mofo.

get a flip kit, they make the kit for it i just did one on a 4x4 85 s-10, i think it was a belltech flip kit, it corrects the pinion angle and everything, so you can do it

You do know that a zr2 is more than just flares right?!?!?!

Yes, I know the ZR2 is more than just flares. I have a 2002 sitting in the driveway.
However, I was just referring to the look to give each reader enough information to know what I was after. They didn\'t make it in a 4-door, so the rest of it was somewhat irrelevant.
Thank you for the clarification though.

I used the add-a leaf, and didn\'t like it...so I did the axle flip...I\'d say try an axle flip. You will get more like 5\" to 5.5\" of height. I used BDS flip kit for the ZR2, it work just fine..

Jeff,
I like the idea of buying a full kit to do this as opposed to reinventing the wheel and fabricating all the parts (unless it is more cost effective to do so).
However, I have so far been unable to find anywhere that has a part number or anyone that sells it. The only thing I found was some minor detail on the installation involving a Highrider.
If you can provide part numbers and sources, I would REALLY appreciate it.
Thanks in advance!

have you checked belltech? i\'m positive they make a flip kit for s-10\'s, in fact i just instaled one on a s-10, they are probably your best bet

That\'s better so far... I have found the Belltech listings. However, they say these are for dropping instead of lifting.
I am going to ask the question (no matter how silly it may seem): can I use them anyway, putting \'em under the spring instead of their intended place (on top of spring)?
Thanks again!

My truck has the axle flip on it its an 87 blazer. It works ok execpt i seem to be more prone to broken leaf springs then anyone else but that might also be due to the low first gear in my 700r4 and the 3.73 in the rear end coupled with constant hard acceleration from dead stops resulting in lots of axle wrap!

is your s-10 a 2wd or 4wd ?
If you are doing a 2wd, Fabtech IS the company to use. They have been doing 2wd\'s for about 10+ years..they know their stuff when is comes to 2wd\'s...i\'v been dealing with Eddie @ Fabtech, for a couple years.

If you are doing 4wd, BDS & Trailmaster make good kits for the ZR2 and 4wd S10\'s...

On the rear axle I would suggest doing some things different then what any of the kits offer..most of the rear add-a leafs I\'v used don\'t hold up. they sag over time. I would say an axle flip and bigger leaf springs would sit the truck up nice. I used leaf springs from a full size chevy..and they work GREAT...The cost for the full size springs was a better buy that any add-a leaf kit...the full size springs bolt in, no welding required !!! thats my $0.02
