I am taking apart a gm corp 10 bolt rear end to replace the spider assembly(center section) and I can\'t seem to get the pinion shaft out. I\'m kinda wondering if a chunk of metal got into there and somehow flared the shaft out. I have tried beating it out, and I have already taken out the screw at the one end of it. On the new assembly that I have, the shaft slides right out. Maybe someone here knows something i\'m doing wrong. Oh yeah, its a locking differential.

Hi Justin, The bolt that holds the cross shaft in,may have broken. Compare the length with another bolt. It is common for the bottom to break off. (DYNLUB) http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

I don\'t think it is, i can move the pinion shaft about 1cm, and I can spin it around also. I dunno though.

are there any burs or mushrooms inside the pin hole or around it? when the spider gear shattered a piece could have gotten hit while the center section was still spinning. hard one to guess on got a pic?

I haven\'t seen any burs on that shaft, but I got to thinking that there might be a piece of metal up in there somehow, maybe on the flat spot of that shaft, i\'m not sure though. I had to drive it about 5 miles after I first heard it popping and stuff before I could park it.

the shaft could have a bur/worn area on it just inside of the carrier where the shaft slides into it. this could be from the spiders rotating on it with poor lubrication. plus it could have been further damaged when the assembly started to come apart.
my question is...what is wrong with the donor assembly? can you swap out the ring gears and replace the carrier bearings. that is just an idea! may mean less downtime an less frustration.

There is nothing wrong with the donor. To get the old parts out you have to get that pin out so you can push the axle shafts in and pull the c-clips out.

We tried using a 4 ton bottle jack to push the pin out but it wouldn\'t do it when we had the thing cranked up as hard as we could. We tried to break the pin\'s housing with an air chisel but it just dulled the chisel. Any other ideas?

maybe some heat on the carrier??? oil is flammable so I\'d be careful with it.

Thats what we are going to try tommorow. I really don\'t want to have to buy a whole new rear end which is about $800 http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif
