for some reason i am not getting a reading on my fuel guage. i cut it once accidently thinking it was a different wire and i did cross it with another one. while it was crossed it read empty then when i fixed it, it read full. i know the tank doesnt stay full. i have one wire running to a switch to turn on the pump and i thought the other was for the guage. anyone know what might be wrong or how to fix it? thanks a lot.

Did you check for a blown/bad fuse???

its either grounding to the frame/tank or your guage or sender have been ruined by passing current through them. try using a voltage tester set to cont to see if it reads any of the wires are ground then use the OHM setting if its a gm sender it should read 0-90 or 320-30 the first number being full the second being empty if you get no reading at all ie open or a closed reading 0 it more then likely means that the sender is fried and needs to be replaced in which case you more then likely have to replace the whole pump/sender assembly in the tank as GM is no longer selling a lot of seperate components..

if its an aftermarket guage or if you want a cheap way out find the apropriate sender from an aftermarket source and replace it.

Now if your tank reads fine then its the guage so try connecting a 60 OHM resitor to it and see if the reading is somewere in the middle of the guage if it is then it has to be wiring somewere.. you should run all theses tests as close to the sneder or guage as possible to aleviate wiring faults messing with your readings.

Hope this helps.

yeah i wired the tail light wire up to the sender for the tank....while it was like that the guage read empty, then when i figured out how dumb i was and switched them back it read full which seems like it was grounded. i made sure no wires were touching anything and they are all taped up none were touching. and when we took an ohm reading i THINK it read about 8 ohms but i could be wrong...so maybe the sender was fried when i had them switched. thanks a lot for the help.
