if i want to place a digital speedo from autometer in dash in place of the stock one which speedo would i use and is this possible? if not digital then which regular speedo would i use? would it be possible to place a autometer tach where my fuel gauge is at then get a smaller fuel gauge from autometer and place it somewhere else in the dash?

Ok, I don\'t know the answer to your question but I have one to add on to it. I have an \'84 S10 with the good ol mechanical speedo. Now, I was planning on using the newer NV tranny out of the 4.3 S10 (NV4500 i think). Now will my speedo hook right up to this tranny or were they designed differently?

Gauges are gauges and you can put them anywhere you want. I\'d say get a bigger tach and mount it on the dash small ones are hard to read. There are also pillar gauge pods that work good.

KNanthrup:

I think the NV trannies are electronic so you might have to switch speedos

It depends on your tranny. I think I remember reading you have a TH350 auto 3 speed. Those use a cable driven speedo. If you are going to redo your speedo, then get one that uses a cable hook up. Does it work now? Is it correct?

I believe that it is the 3500. They came with a electric speedo hook up. It hooks up to the VSS on the tranny and controls the speedometer and anti lock if the truck was equipted with it. There is no way I know of to use a manual speedo with an electric tranny readout. I know of adaptors if it was vice versa, an electric speedo to a cable tranny. Im pretty sure you will have to get a new speedo and wire it to the tranny.

A new speedo won\'t correct the problem. If you do want a new one, for looks or whatever, just stick with a cable one. Its a hassle with the electronic. They\'re usually cheaper too. To correct it, you will need new speedo gears. Where the cable screws into the transmssion, there should be a little peice holding the transmission gear in. Inside there, there are 2 little gears. You just have to change them out. Your tires and rear end gear ratio will detemine what ones you need. Its usually easiest to have a tranny shop calibrate it, or at least get the correct speedo gears. I told them what gears I wanted to run, ans how tall my tires were, and they installed them for me.

i went with a complete VDO setup

fuel, volts, temp, oil, speedo, tach

all in the dash

the fuel, volts, temp, oil are 2 1/16

the speedo and tach are 3 1/8

all electric

the speedo uses a vss comeing out the tranny (leaving the gear in the tranny), drove exactly 1 mile to calibrate it (dyno works better).
