I am still having starter trouble. After about two weeks of having my new 350 in the gear reduction starter started to grind on the flexplate. I replaced the starter, then I replaced the flexplate today. I have tried shims but they do not help. It did work great for two weeks with no shims or anything. The only thing I can think of is an electrical problem. From the looks of the new flexplate it looks like the solinoid is not fully engaging. Because one time when I tied to start it I could hear the starter spining but nothing was contacting. Since it is the second brand new gear reduction starter that has done this I am beging to think that it is an electrical problem. Has anyone experienced anything like this before? Thanks for any suggestions and advice.
I just replaced my flexplate I dont know why it wears out so quick?

Thats the thing. I replaced the flexplate and on the first time it grinded. I know the new flexplate is not worn. The old flexplate itsn\'t worn too bad either. I have tried all mechanical routs and the only thing I can think of is electrical. Before I tear my starting electrical system apart I was wondering if anyone had any similar problems.

Hi. Do you have the correct starter bolts? Chevy starters use metric and us size. I am talking about the bolt shaft not the hex head. The wrong bolts alow the starter to move, maybe this is why so many people wear out flex plates. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

You can run a momentary push buttom between your starter and your battery. Make sure you use at least 10 gauge wire. This will bypass you trucks electrical system. I had to do this to mine. For some reason in the summer my truck doesn\'t like to start with the key. Hope this helps....

I am using 3/8 x4 1/2 x 16 bolts I will pull the starter off and check to see how much play I have. Thanks for the advice.

Mine just will not turn over with the key in hot weather. Haven\'t bothered to check the wiring when it\'s hot, just mounted a switch under the steering columb. It did it last summer, thats when I installed the switch. Had a 4.3 at the time. Put a 400 in last winter. Started every time with the key. Now the last week (90 degree weather) It\'s doing the same thing again..
