Right now I\'m in the phase of doing the major plumbing on my engine. I have the engine sitting in the bay and the tranny bolted on as well. From here it\'s a bunch of misc. stuff I have to take care of and so I\'m coming up with all the simple and stupid questions because I have never built and hooked up a SBC before. I\'d appreciate if any of you could help me with any of these questions. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

1.) Does anyone else run a short water pump? I am using a short water pump and I was able to figure out the pulleys and stuff, but now I need to install my alternator. Can anyone tell me what brackets I need to install my alternator for a short water pump setup? Which side does it install on and what and where does it bolt to? How about any pics?

2.) My water pump only has one connection to go to to heater. Is there something I\'m missing here? Originally I have two hoses coming from the heater core but now I\'m just trying to figure how to hook it up to the ater pump. Can I eliminate one hose or do I have to do something else?

3.) For now due to financial reasons I\'m using a two post coil with a dual points alternator. I want to be sure the electrical wiring is correct. For the coil I\'d assume I just connect positive and negative wires (from battery) to each marked side. Then from the coil the center plug wire that goes to the center of the distributor. My next issue would be the distributor. I don\'t know how the distributor hooks up because it doesn\'t have any wire hookups on the outside of it. The only thing I can see is a wire connected to what looks like a resistor on the back of the outside but it doesn\'t really have an obvious place you would attach a wire, although there is one spot that I could attach one. Other than that, this is the only wire, which then goes inside and splits to each point set. Could it be that it only needs the middle plug wire from the coil?

4.) Has anyone ever had their driveshaft shortened? Any Idea how much this costs? My driveshaft is probably about 2 inches too long right now. I can almost just barely squeeze it on, but I know it\'s not right. I also have my engine set all the way forward so my only other option would be using axle set-back plates. The problem with this is that I don\'t know if it will set it back far enough and I\'d also rather keep my axles aligned in the wheel wells.

I think that\'s all for now that I can think of. Your help is appreciated. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

I used a short woter pump on mine. Check my pictures. I had to rig it, but it works. As for your heater hoses, one goes to the pump the other goes to the intake. Can\'t help on the distributor, I used a HEI. The last time I had a driveshaft shortened it cost me $100. I need to get mine shortened as well. Mine fits just no play....Good luck....

Thanks for the replies. Ok well cross off #2 because I have that figured out.

I just talked to a shop about shortening my driveshaft and they could do it for about $130. $80 of that is just balancing the damn thing. Oh well I guess I\'ll have to bite the bullet and get it done. Can\'t go anywhere without it. One nice thing I found out is that they can make you a driveshaft completely custom from scratch for $500.

Let\'s see. I still have to try my coil/distributor setup. Nobody has replied to that so I\'ll probably just have to go with my guess and see if it works.

One last problem I am having is getting a long enough clutch line from the master to slave cylinder. I\'ve looked for adapter to connect two and haven\'t found the right size fittings and the auto and hardware places don\'t have the right type of line either...sigh.

the negative of your coil connect to the points trigger. the positive go to the swithched pos resitor wire.

ok, i got the negative... but what\'s the switched pos resistor wire? I\'m starting from scratch here, just trying to figure out where to run it.

the swithed wire will be one that is hot while cranking and running. not sure what color or other marking. if your are staying with points type dist, you will need to add a ballast resistor block like on the vintage cars to enable you to not burn up your points. if you go with a large cap HEI type dist in the future, just take out the ballast resitor and run the hot while cranking / running wire to the terminal. that resistor looking thing on the dist is a condensor. just basically a capacitor to store a small bit of energy when your points are open. this is your neg. anymore ??? just ask.
