In Lancaster PA my friends and I were driving on some back roads when it was getting pretty dark out. my friends were in mini vans I was in my 82 S-10. the guy in front slams on his brakes and goes into the amish mans lawn i had no clue what was going on so i went around him and all of a sudden there was like 10 cows in the middle of the road. I slammed on the brakes which locked up and went sliding into the cow. It got up and walked away. i was going about 45 when i hit the brakes and skidded about 10-15 feet. 1780 $ later i have a black and blue truck. i was just about to get my V-8. Now i have to save more money and get a job. i\'m only 17. and have already hit a cow.

You guys are lucky you at least have some fences to hold them in. New Mexico is a free range state. NO FENCES, you just take the chance of hitting one ALL THE DAMN TIME. And if you hit it you bought it. The ranchers\' insurance doesn\'t even have to pay for it. People get killed here all the time from hitting black cows(an horses) at night.

The only places that have fences are along MAJOR highways and interstates. County roads and most state roads dont have fences....Like i said, New Mexico is a Free Range State which means ranchers dont have to put up fences and 90% of all the land is public land, now that doesn\'t mean you just go turn your cows loose somewhere out in the desert, you have to bid for the grazing rights on a particular section of the land at the BLM office.

-Nevada and New Mexico are both open range states. Once you leave the tourist trap cities, you are strictly on your own. The smaller towns all have cattle guards to keep the critters from roaming downtown.

-Most of the night time open range single vehicle accidents that aren\'t alcohol/drug related are car vs. cow, and I\'m here to tell you that hitting a 1200 pound steer while cruising at 80+ mph will put one heck of a smear on your paint job.

-Local cops usually try to keep the most recent car/truck on display for a while as a warning.

-I doesn\'t matter who pays, you lose.
