-First off, I like the site. Lots of good info here.

-I have a chance to pick up an \'85 S-15 extended cab 4X4, small V-6, automatic. The body is in real good shape. This beast was never really used as a 4X4.

-Naturally, it has the problems that come with mileage, but that\'s okay: it gives me a chance to build what I want.

-I hadn\'t been thinking about a 4X4, my sights were on a 2WD S-10 longbed.

-So, what do I need to look out for and what should I consider in rebuilding this as a boat/small camper tow vehicle? No monster wheels; no drag racing; no mud bogging or stump jumping. Just a...truck.

-Are there any good articles or books on the truck itself (brakes, suspension, steering, etc.)?

-My guess is that a relatively mild 350 or 383 would be best. What about carb vs. MPFI? (I have my own opinion but want to hear other points of view)

-All comments & suggestions are welcome, but it may take me a day or so to get back on line.

-Thanks!

Mild 350...RV cam, good set of heads, build it to make some awesome low end torque, as if you were going to be stump jumping and mud bogging. If you have the money for everthing that goes with th Fi kit then go with it, but if your going for economy priced...carburated is the way to go. For a tranny i would go with 4 speed auto of some sort....TH-400 or 4L60, with a low stall converter. 3.73 limited slip. And a good cooling system.

i agree fi would be ideal for a daily driver a throttle body style would be easier and cheaper than mpi maybe find a early 90s fulsize for parts and ideas

-Thanks, guys, the response is greatly appreciated.

-Good points on TBI vs. MFI. As much as I like carburetors, the reality is electronics rule the day.

-Good point on the torque needed for bogging as well. Hopefully that kind of gearing won\'t be needed.

-I\'m surprised at no support for a stroker kit, particularly since they are available as crate engines...but I haven\'t checked the price.

-Given that a 700R4 is going to be a more reasonable cost tranny, do the aftermarket internal shifter plates really help? What is the year cutoff to avoid the full electronic tranny controls?

-Gad, there are tons of questions. Looks like research time on the old message board.
