The VTEC is a honda engine. I have a link below that has a dyno of 264 hp.On that link they have a couple of mpeg movies.

Variable valve Timing and Electronic lift Control. Their cams have eight lobes per cylinder. The first four are for low rpm and the the second four are for higher rpms. Once the engine reaches a specific rpm a locking pin locks the rocker arms to the second set of lobes. By doing this the valve lift can be changed for higher rpm power. V-tec allows those honda guys to run \"two cams\", one for low rpm drivabilty and gas milage, and a second for higher rpm power. The only problem with v-tec is at higher rpms the v-tec can bend valves and cause other problems. This is why some of the serious import builders will chose v-tec killer cams. Some of the b18 and b16 motors can be built to handle 10,000 rpm and 600 hp. There stock cranks can hanle the power, however their rods and cast pistons/rings can not hanle to power. B18 engineS came in the integras, and the b16 engines came in the civic and both can be built. I know imports seem to be the under dog around here but some of the imports can be seriously built.

yup, variable timing. Here\'s the way I describe it:
Turbo Lag-Power= VTEC
I\'ve been for a few rides in quick Vtec civics (one 12.8 Second Civic, and a few mid 13 second civics)... Basically, you floor it, and the engine revs like normal until 5500 RPM, when it feels like you let off the gas, then floored it again. At that 5500 mark, Vtec engages, and you get a kick in the ass of power. Of course, Vtec definitely has a sucky point.
Along with the high RPM motor potential, you have peak torque aboe 5000 RPM. It basically makes for a very picky car when it comes to the powerband. The torque line itself sits pretty flat, but it\'s so low (a 170 h.p B16 VTEC motor makes 111 lb/ft. @ 5500 RPM)...
If you get caught in the wrong gear, you\'re screwed. i debated buying the 12.8 second Civic a while back, but I really need the torque to make a car fun to drive....
A little sidenote:
The new Celica GT-S uses a variation of the VTEC idea, as does BMW. BMW uses it in the M3 and M5, making 333 h.p @8,000 RPM out of a 3.0L inline 6.
The M5 makes 405 h.p out of a DOHC, variable timed 5.0L V8, N/A... Revs very high, too...
Hope I helped a little

Ive got variable timing on my small block chevy.....Its called the mechanical advance on my msd pro-billet and my v-tec controller is the spring kit that came with it. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif
