with that motor there is no downs they make great power and they are realiable

I\'m running a 406. The motor came out of its orginal car at 164,000 miles and still running. I rebuilt it and it runs great...

they are hard to cool........I had a 86 iroc with a 400 in it........great pwr though

that is what i am installing in my truck as well.the only downside is that the cost is slightly higher to rebuild. they can have cooling issues.but all-in-all they are powerful motors

2 bolt mains only also

Many of the early ones had 4-bolt mains. They can fly. Don\'t forget to drill steam holes if you swap heads.

400\'s are great. I ran a .030 over with a comp cam 292 cam kit, edelbrock torkerII, holley 750 vac secondaries and 202 smog heads back in 87. I remember one issue that came up. I was told to make sure you have the correct fly wheel / flexplate and harmonic balancer because the motor is externally balanced. Dont quote me on that it was a while ago.

they are externally balanced
