View Full Version : Choke Light Staying On..Where\'s the Relay???
I\'ve got a 85 S10 Blazer that has had \"very\" intermittent choke light illumination problems for the last 5 years. Well it has been onsistent now for the last week. I know an alternator putting out less that 12 volts will cause this and I\'ve confirmed that alternator output is good. The GM shop manual shows a choke relay mounted on the \"convenience center\" along with the light and seat belt buzzer and flasher. I have owned this car since it was new and have gotten to know it real well. It has over 300K miles on it (half of those with a V8 under the hood) and I have never seen a convenience center. My flasher in on the fuse panel but none of the other relays or buzzers are there. Anyone know where this relay is? Is the book wrong and I don\'t have one in my system? Can something else that I\'m overlooking be causing this? Any help will be appreciated.

i not sure, but i think your oil pressure switch can cause it to come on if the oil pressure is to low. i am most likely wrong on this model.
or the switch itself could be defective

Black electrical tape or a really small drill bit can solve your problem very quickly. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif

i believe the \"un\"convence center is up under the dash higher than the fuses closer to the headlight switch might be wrong though thats were the buzzer was on my 85
Sounds like the buzzer noise is coming from the area behind the headlight switch. Now that I\'m thinking about it, I think I was back in that area years back to change out something. If I\'m not mistaking it took a mirror and a flashlight just to look in the area. Will dig into it tomorrow.
The oil pressure sending unit can cause this if you have an oil pressure light and not a gauge. My 85 has the Sport package which came with full instrumentation.
I thought about putting tape over the light but I just couldn\'t do it. I\'ve got to fix it right. I guess thats what you get after working on fighter aircraft for the last 22 years.
Got probelm resolved. In case anyone runs into this, this is what I found. My convenience panel had no choke relay. The only relays on my panel is the horn, hazard flasher and the seatbelt/headlight buzzer. So even though the text in my book said that a choke relay was supposed to be there I decided to see if the schematic showed the same thing. Don\'t you know the schematic showed what I actually had. When I followed the choke heater wiring it lead me to the EFE relay that is on the firewall on the drivers side outboard of the windshield wiper motor. I pulled it down and ohmed it out and it appeared to read fine if the schematic is correct. The blades on the relay and the female connectors on the harness end looked like shit. It looked like it had that brown corrosive preventative kosmoline (???) was put on it. I cleaned the connector up, fired the car and once it was running the light went out. The only two other things that go to that relay are no longer in use (the heating grid that went below the carb and a temp sensor.)
