I need to drill a hole in the output shaft of my 4L60E to convert to a cable driven speedometer so I can run the speedo in my 86 Anyone? I tried to drill a hole in the shaft so it would hold the clip that holds the gear in place. But that shaft is really hard. Any suggestions? I epoxyed it on but not sure how long that will last.

Thanks

that should last a long time as for drilling a hole u have to get a carbide drill bit which will be hard to find because they just dont sell it in stores

Get the book, Chevrolet TPI & TBI Engine Swapping. It shows parts to run a cable-driven speedometer with your output shaft, as well as a vss (40-tooth reluctor ring for the ECM).

Summit Racing carries the book. Part # JTR-TPI.

If you have to drill a hole in hardened material, Sears and home depot sell masonry drill bits with carbide tips soldered in. They work very well in a pinch.

I have the book they swap output shafts if i remember correctly. Not about to do that now since the whole thing is in the truck. I will try the epoxy and if that doesn\'t work out try a carbide bit I guess. Don\'t have much faith in that bit though it is worth a try.

You don\'t have the book, Chevrolet TPI & TBI Engine Swapping.

The book shows a collar clamp/key assembly that holds the speedometer gear in place on output shafts that don\'t have a hole for the speedometer gear.

MikeK I guess you don\'t want to tell me what the fix is, only to buy the book again?

My primary income comes from writing books. I try to help people who have relatively new books.

If the vehicle-speed-sensor chapter only goes to page 12-8, then It sounds like your book is at least 8 years old. In the newest book, the chapter goes to 12-18.

Also, if your transmission is a 4L60-E, it won\'t shift unless it has a reluctor-ring. So if you remove the relucto- ring to run a speedometer cable, your transmission won\'t work properly.

The new book shows three different ways to solve your problem.

So even though I have bought two editions of the S10 conversion manual and the TBI/TPI swap manual you won\'t tell me what the fix is that you recommend for this????

Interesting....
