View Full Version : Transmission rebuild?

I\'ve had enough with my 700-r. I plan on taking it to a tranny shop to get worked on. I think I\'m going to have them just take it back to completely stock. My problem is, nobody will give me a ballpark price.
They all say,\"Just bring the transmission by the shop.\" We all know that, this is easier said than done considering I\'ll need something to drive daily, and I don\'t want to have to take it to 10 different shops just to get a good deal.
So would anyone like to take a stab at the price of the job? Maybe not parts, but labor. I appreciate all of your help.

It\'s about the same around here for a on the bench rebuild. Sometimes it gets higher if the tranny needs any hard parts. I would at least get a warranty and a shift kit.
Good luck sir,
Jeff....

Sounds foolish but are you mechanically clind. Buy a video or manual and rebuild it your self. That\'s what i do, I have a work truck that is good for a trans rebuild once a year(truck hauls more weight that any poor truck should have to). I got sick of junk yard trans and paying $700 for a rebuild. The kit to rebuild this trans are usaully only about $100-$125. Just a thought SSB

what does the $65 kit actually give you? We\'ve already put a shift kit in it. The shift kit didn\'t help my situation. We believe it\'s internal. Is the $65 kit for internal parts?
These are my problems:
1.) when you give it full throttle it doesn\'t want to shift from 1st to 2nd.
2.) 2nd to 3rd shifts WAY too soon. The TV cable doesn\'t seem to fix the problem.
3.) while cruising in 3rd and you slam the pedal it should shift down to 2nd for the RPM\'s, but it doesn\'t.
I\'ve posted several posts about this thread and tried many things, but no results...

I never realized that it was that cheap.I guess that an automatic tranny has always been a mystery on how it actually works. Hey Wicked, do you need any specialty tools to rebuild a tranny? I will definitely consider doing it my self next time, just gotta get a video.....Jay

i dont have the correct tools that u need but know tricks around it that i learned from a friend.the kit gives u all the gaskets and steels and friction plates and other stuff like a bunch of o-rings and i think it comes with a new band

I had a similar problem with my tranny not shifting right. then i found a site that showed how to properly set the tv cable up and i followed that and i havn\'t had a problem since. i think i found the site on here but i dont remember what it was. maybe try searching for it if u think it may help.

yeah i did that same thing, i pressed the button with the throttle all the way out and it didnt fix my problem. i had to make sure that the cable was extending far enough out and adjust it where it connects on the carb if that makes sense at all, it does to me cuz i know exactly where im talking about but im not sure if its clear enough for anyone else to understand lol sorry if its not

I have heard of the tv cable coming un-hooked down where it goes into the transmission itself. I would try to pull the tv cable tube out and see if it happened to come un-attached. It really sounds like a simple TV cable problem.

Well, we adjusted the tv cable about as best as we can. It now downshifts, and that was the major problem... It\'s still slipping a little from 2-3. I\'m pretty sure the bands are worn out a bit. Oh well, it works for now. Thank you all for your help...

Just wondering if you guys are measuring clutch pack clearances and band pin apply length, maybe the thickness of the pump vanes and rotor. All this stuff makes a huge difference, especially if you have real subtle shift problems like you do. You may have a shift valve with a burr, who knows. 700R\'s were known for a mess of valve body and spacer plate issues before about 1990. I don\'t know what year your trans is, but rebuilding them for a living taught me that the right way is the only way.
