9\" width ?

how wide does a 9\" need to be (measured from the outside of the backing plates) in order to be the s10\'s factory width ? the reason I am asking is I have a 9\'\' housing I\'m planning on narrowing (has no brakes on it )and no guts ...just the housing....I can\'t get an accurate measurement cause I don\'t have the brakes.. and the s-10\'s is still under it....l.
