Well, I\'m 45 now (groan!) and spent the last 18 years in computers. I have a college degree, my MCSE, CNE, and CCNA and now I shuffle paperwork as a postcloser for a mortgage company, thanks to the dot-com crash. Oh well. Before that though, I was an auto and truck mechanic. Why a mechanic? I love working on cars which brings me to the advice part: Sometimes what you love to do for a hobby doesn\'t work out as a job. You might get burned out (as I did) and end up hating both your job and your hobby. Now, I come home from work and love tinkering with my Blazer and a few other projects because it\'s different from what I do all day, kind of an escape. Just my 2 cents worth.
Full time for Grainger by day and freelance PHP programmer by night & weekends.

what you said about your hobby and job is the reason i wont go and be a mechanic. i am going to go to tech school for two years and hopefully try and get into a college and get a Bachelors degree and go in the airforce
i wanted to go in as enlisted but then changed my mind and thought to my self if i aint an officer i ant crap. o one more thing is college hard as hell? has any one done the military route before?

I am an auto claims adjuster for a sister company of Nationwide Insurace. I have only a High School Diploma and had to work my butt off for 5 years to get a professional position ,where they will hire someone with a Degree and 0 experience.
I also have no student loans http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif
I get to investigate accidents and then pay out ungodly amounts of money from someone elses checking account http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif . The bad part is putting up with the uneducated masses of moron drivers who have no idea how insurance works.

I have had close to 30 different jobs sinse I was 16. I am now 44. I work for Bellsouth (phone company). I do residential and business repair. Climb poles dig holes and everything in between. Basically I drive around in a 99 2500 Chevy van and fix peoples phones, what ever the problem may be. I can honestly say this is the best job I have ever had and best pay. It took me untill I was 40 to find something I really enjoy. My advice is to go get an education and make something of yourself... Good luck.....

i spent 13 years in the military. got lots of education while i was in and that helped me along the way toward a degree. i got out due to a back injury. working toward an engineering degree right now. should be done in 18 months.
college isnt that hard just have to get priorities straight. study before play. at least in college you only go to school 2 to 4 hours a day and you can set your own schedule to fit your needs and wants. (lots of girls for this old pervert too!) just stay focused!!!
the military is a stressful route. if you can handle it then it is a great career. the pay and benifits arent too bad either. i would recomend 3 years as enlisted to start then if it looks like a career move then go to officer school as a reenlistment. i think the army is still paying off school debts for a 4 year enlistment with the option to go officer after the initial enlistment. just call each branch recruter to see your options. but if you give your number to them they wont let up till they have you! they will kiss you ass alot too. my recomendations for a tech type job would be air force and navy. the coast guard isnt too bad either. my baby sister is going to get nursing degree through the coast guard. they are really kissing her ass and then some.
good luck guys

i have done many different things before deciding on something i like. been a mechanic for many different place, went to school got a degree in welding, didn\'t want to do that any more, went back to school and got a degree in maintenance and fluid power. Wanted to still further my education, so i am working on my degree for mechanical design. I have recently been promoted to a project engineer for the sheet metal fabricator i have worked for the last 4 years. I also work in the shop alot, weld, fab..i do all there custom one off assembly\'s. I get bored doing the same thing..i like my job, there might be better ones out there i could get, but how many offer the variety that i have....not many.
If i was u I would go into the military and get college money for school. I have been in the Army for 6 years now 3 active duty 3 National Guard now. I am not going to tell you to go in it is your choice but some of the Jobs in the military will give a head start for college, if you go into something you like to do. Unlike me went into the Infantry and i was going to school for computer networking then it wasn\'t for me, so now i am going for auto tech.
If you go in the Guard you can get your MGI Bill if you sign up for 6 years and for the first year they take $1200 or $100 month that you have to pay in I think The MGI Bill starts at $20,000 for 3 years active duty or 6 National Guard.
God now i sound like a recruiter thats not good. But it willl help to pay off college.
But do what will make you happy

Okay this is why I call myself the old fart...I\'m 47 and have been selling auto parts for the last 27 years. Not a big paying career, but I love the job I have had now for the last almost 10 years in a very large salvage yard. I started working in the electronic field right out of school...hated it,but it did pay my bills. I do work on the side at night with a very good freind doing body work, paint and mechanical. Have worked on cars since I was 15 or 16,so I know I could have done that for a living but decided not to. I also looked into to Colorado Aero Tech to become a A&P mechanic. That\'s Airframe and Powerplant and would be making good money. Got married and out the window that went. So in the long run sir it IS your choice and I wish you luck in your lifes endevor.

im 21 now and i was in the same boat yous two were in 4 years ago. out of school, didnt go to college b/c i hated school with a passion and i couldnt see putting myself thru another 4 years of bs im never gonna need just to get a piece of paper to get a job. theres plenty of jobs that dont require college. i worked at a dealer for a while and hated it. cars are my hobby and it sucked all the fun out of it doin it for a job. did telephone pole work for quite a while, that was pretty fun. was laid off for over half a year and totally broke and saw an ad for bartending school so i went. passed at the top of the class and eventually taught bartending at the same school for a brief time. now im a bar manager at 21 years old. i love my job. and it keeps me from drinkin. i look at it and think \"too much like work\" it didnt keep me from drinkin tonight tho, im totally railed right now. another good thing it did for me was to open my eyes up to alcoholism. i can spot alkys in a crowd. theres alot of it in my family, not in my immediate family thank God. and if your a bartender then your oviously in a bar all the time so youll meet more than a few girls. so a date is rarely if ever a problem.

I have been in the military for about 12 years now. I am a heavy equipment mechanic and now the shop foreman. I love working on heavy junk and I still like working on my own stuff, but I think that is because I don\'t work on light duty vehicles. I don\'t know for sure. I tried the college thing, wasn\'t for me then. I have been thinking about taking a class here and there, just to get my degree, rather have it and not need than need it and not have it. The military is NOT for everyone, but I do think that everyone should do four years, but thats me. Best of luck in your decision.

And to think, I keep preaching to my 14 year old daughter that she really needs to go to college when she graduates HS. Hmmm. After hearing this, maybe not! http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif

I will be 27 in a week and have about 1 year to graduate with a PhD in Biochemistry. I have been in school most of my life, but have my own janitorial business on the weekend and I work for auctioneers sometimes to help out. I also fix cars for people that need it and DO NOT CHARGE. I feel better this way. I party as much as physically possible and have two dogs. I also drag-race, but I think we all do that. anyway I would just go to college of some sort and get a degree, so you will not have to go back when you are older. STAY IN SCHOOL! Not becasue I think so, but you still can do other things, but somehow having a college (even 2 year) degree gets you farther in life.

I went into the Marines when I was 17. That was difficult, but I survived. I got to experience things and places most people never do. I reenlisted to get some training that has served me well for almost 30 years. Being a Marine has opened doors for me professionally and socially. That path is certainly not for everyone, but it gave me a start on life that I would not trade for anything.
And yes, for those of you checking the math, I am older than fasrnur. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif

I started out as a logger in Calif with my father until I was 17. Then I started driving the Big riggs all over the U.S. As I got older, i grew tired of the long weeks out and no life to speak of. Got into the healthclub craze. That lasted for about 5 years. Started driving again, ended up in Chattanooga Tn. Now work for Sysco Food Service for the last 13 years. Present duties, Trucking Supervisor for the southeastern part of Tn and north GA. I love my job, 49 years young! Trucking was and is my first love as a job. I\'m 19 in my second year of college. Schools a good way to go. never really liked school but need a degree b/c i want to be a programmer. College is nothing like hs. I love being able to only go to class for 3 hours a day i get out before noon everyday. currently work at a call center which isn\'t the best job but pays well. i\'m in between college and the real world and not really ready for college to end or to job head first into a career. so now just coasting through college.

well, i just graduated also, and this is my route... i had my own little lawn care thing from when i was 14-17, while also working in my dads shop as a mechanic/gofer... this year i worked almost full time there just helping out, i then moved to sherwood oregon(bout 20 min from portland) and am working at Fry\'s Electronics store as a Car Audio Salesman, just until january when i head off to wyoming to Wyotech, to take auto tech, street rod custom fab, custom interior, high performance engine, and chassis fab. I am paying for all the college myself, i get a little finacial aid and the rest im going to get a loan for because i know i will love this job. It will be like doing a hobby and getting payed for it. I plan to move back to oregon and open my own shop with a friend of mine taking the same classes when we graduate. Thats my plan.

I am thinking about taking the same route you are fathead. The only thing I am worried about is owning a business with a friend or relative. Sooner or later someone is gonna get mad and then you lost a good friend/business partner. If I was going to do it I would want to be the owner and hire my friends.

my best advice, for anybody who hasnt, thats still young enough, stay in school. otherwise, youll end up in a job u hate, and hating your boss, or you may like the job, but in most cases the boss is still a jerk. my own experience. once i get my diploma (im taking a year off..., then writing the ged test), im gonna go to college for computers, doing diagnostics/ repair. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

I am a college student going into my sophmore year. I also work at my college as a Computer Tech for the I.T. department. I do basically everything all the other techs do, but get paid student wages.. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_frown.gif
I am also in a pretty successful original new rock band from Dayton, Ohio. We are currently recording our Debut album. We are also shopping around for a record label. Hopefully, something will come of this. I feel very confident. We\'ll just have to play it out I guess...
