what does it take to run mid 13\'s?
I realize that a lot of you might think that\'s kinda slow, but this is all I really want out of my truck.
My truck is a standard cab 87\' with a stock rear end (ugh!). I currently have a 305, but am replacing it with a 350 in the next month or so.
So what will I need to do to my 350 to get it to run in the mid 13\'s? Keep in mind that this will still be my daily driver. I am also under E-controls, but I\'ve already passed for the next 2 years http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif so that shouldn\'t be a factor...

use 3.73 gears...and get the rpm power package from edelbrock ...it\'s make\'s 420 horse power...and should put a s10 in the 12\'s...with no problem....but it\'s about 1500.00 or so...if not than just do this....350 flat top with vortec heads and a 280 comp cam..with at least a 650 carb....gear\'s is where the difference is at....3.73 are a great street -strip gear...4.11 are more of a strip gear than street...but a mild 350 with a set of slick\'s will run 13\'s...my old 350 ..had old school heads with 2.02 valves and a rpm preformer intake with a 750 holley and 4.11 gears ran 12.80\'s...with slick\'s and mid 13\'s on street tire\'s

I run in the 13s because of lack of traction. I have nitrous and believe in the stuff! I would get the 350 and it will be able to handle 100 shot at least (regularly). Spend your money on the tires and the suspension. I did not do that and now I cannot launch! This way my times are much slower than they could be!

port your 305 heads and put the xe268 cam from comp or call delta cams here in washington and they will make any grind for under 40 bucks.your 3.42 is all you need,my 3.73 make it run hella hot on the freeway.
i just saw a shgort bed run 12.70 with a 3.42 open diff and grand ams.he had a 389 stroker with the rpm package.if he got gears and slicks hed run 11s.
also get a jegs 3500 stall.they are about 220 shipped, and ive been daily driving and racing for 2 years on it.that would wake up that 3.42

a little info on the Edelbrock RPM package..... it does not make the horsepower that they claim..... i have the dyno sheets to prove it, i put the rpm package into my motor and i only made 282 hp at the rear wheels..... since then i put a blower on it and now it makes the hp i wanted, but dont get excited by the numbers they claim..... it will prob give you a mid 13 sec pass though..... i ran a 12.88 with street tires at 113.85 mph...... thats with the blower, so i wouldnt expect the rpm package to do much at all.... i would save your money and get the AFR 190 or 185 heads and use a mild cam and that will get you there quick!

i ran high 13\'s with my truck and all that really was a set of S/R torquer heads, elgin cam, RPM intake and holley 750, when i got it tuned right it would run 13.8\'s at 102, if ya do the math with traction it would have run real low 13\'s no dought about it. I built that motor for about $1500 complete brand new parts.

what u need is the gear and converter and u could run 13\'s all day on a bone stock motor

AFR 190\'s, whoo waaaa. Those are coming this winter. Im using one of their combos soon. Supposed to make 450 hp. We\'ll see how it works out.
I run 13s and I have a xe 268 , 305 194 heads, 780 holley,.030 flat tops (350) ,with 3.23 gears...pretty much low buck stuff, just gotta tune it and she\'ll go !

The AFR heads are just plain sweet. I really want to get a pair soon, they\'re well worth the bucks and they make the power they claim.
It honestly doesn\'t take much to hit 13\'s. I can run 13\'s on my low budget engine that cost me less than $800. 350 4 bolt main, comp xe274 cam, ported 305 high comp heads with 2.02/1.60 valves.
You can do it on a budget or you can reach farther with a high quality setup. That\'s the beauty of the chevy smallblock... there are soooo many combinations.

another proven combo,350 w/flattops hott cam,1.6rrs,vortec heads,air gap or rpm,670 st.avenger,1-5/8 headers.You will definately run in the 13s with this set up.you will need at least a 2500 stall w/3.42s or 3.73s.

That might put you into the 12\'s. HOT cam+ vortec heads should be over 400 hp.
That w/traction in a standard cab short box should be at least mid 12\'s.
Im around 355 hp, and probably weigh 5-600 lbs more than a truck, and I know I\' can hit at least low 13\'s with better traction.

I would say flat tops, vortec heads, edelbrock intake, 210-215 duration cam @.050, and a 750, small stall and a 3.73. Thats pretty close to my old combo, and it ran low 13.
