i have a turbo 350 in my 84 S10 short box behind a 350 SBC its pritty much stock with and 1800 stall converter in it now to me this thing holds first gear way to long for an auto matic it does not shift out of 1st till almost 3500 rpm and when it does man it hits hard.Is this about right or for a stock setup my daily driver shifts long before this thing does and not as hard seams to me that this could hurt some clutches or something in there. Is there a adjustment in the transmision or is it possible someone installed a shift kit wrong and i\'m going to be looking for a new tranny soon if i don\'t fix it.

I would drop the pan and check the installation of the filter to ensure that it was not installed backwards. Also the kickdown may need adjustment. Also the modulator valve may need changed. Those are 3 simple things that can be done to start w/.

If the tranny has been reworked and a shift kit put in you might have to play with the govenor. You can change the springs to raise or lower the shift points under normal driving. Very easy to do, even with the tranny in. Had to do it to mine.

Is the kickdown cable connected and does it shift fine at full throttle? Is the shift to 3rd the same late shift? Usually fast shifts do not hurt the clutches, but they cause general stress on the driveline. The sprag is the weak link in the TH350, as I hear.

If you have an adjustable vacuum modulator turn it 1-2 turns counter clockwise (losen). This will lower the amount of vacuum it needs to shift in general. Also check the vacuum lines (should have no more than 6\" of rubber line rest metal 1/4\" breakline is best! Hand bendable and CHEAP!) there should be at least 12\" of Hg vacuum at idle for the vac. mod to work. Most people including myslef that have a TH350 say that they shift way early. I am usually in 3rd by 30 (373 gear). Let us know if you need more help.
