I have a 1980 GMC 350 I am rebuilding for the s10 conversion and I am wondering about the exhaust manifolds. They say you need special ones to avoid modifications but the stock ones seem pretty close to the block as it is. Can they be used or is the closeness to the block not the issue. Thanks.

i believe thy say to use something like a camaro exhaust, but i think you have to do somthing with the driver side.i bought headers thay worke good.

you have to be concerned with the shift linkage from the sterring column down to the transmission, i went with the heddman headers and a floorshifter.

So if I have converted from a manual trans. with a floor shifter, I have no problems?

i still have the automatic (turbo 350)

just went with a b&m floot shifter, instead of dealing with the column shift linlkage.

im not even going to say that you wont have any problems <g>

Thanks for the replies. I have an 88 2wd and am going with the T350 automatic. I am just going to use the hole where the old T5 manual ws for the automatic shifter. I am still not clear as to why the modified exhaust manifolds are needed because like I said they are really close to the block as it is. I don\'t have an engine hoist so I can\'t hang the 350 in place to see what the issue is. I read somewhere else on these forums that it has to do with the steering linkage. I wonder if this is the case with all s10\'s or just particular ones (e.g. power steering or 4x4). I have manual steering so there is not a whole lot of junk associated with the linkage. Any ideas? http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif

Umm, you dont really need that big of a hole for a floor shifter, you only need about an inch diameter, because the the automatic shifter is cable operated, you will probably have to cover the hole frome the manual with some sheet metal or something so you have a strong place mount the shifter.

THE STEERING SHAFT IS THE PROBLEM UNLESS YOU USE MANIFOLDS FROM A 89,90 CAMARO OR BIRD 350 ANY OTHER TYPE WILL HIT THE SHAFT. BEST TO GO WITH HEDMAN.

I tried 3 different types of manifolds and none of which came close to the steering shaft, my problems were with the manifolds hitting the mounts or dumping out right into that front crossmember.

I used headers fit nice.

I used the 80 el Camino manifolds and still use the factory coulmn shifter.

The only real problem you could run into would be with clearance for the steering shaft. Older style s-10\'s had a bigger steering nuckle, and it might hit. I think the 90+ are a little smaller, and if that don\'t work, I think one from a F-150 will clear it.

Depending on your engine setback, you can have different clearence problems. The stock type manifolds that give you the least problems are the \"low perf.\" from camaro/firebird.In my 85 blazer with over an inch setback the passenger side fire wall will have to be indented. On the driversides side the steering shaft will rub,it can be moved over but I found it easier to use the ford f-150 steering shaft. Qthers can be used but require more mods.

you can also use the upper steering shaft from an astro van, works perfectly, you have to grind the inside of the shaft to fit the s10s steering shaft...Lt1 f-body manifolds work well, compared to the 3rd gen f-bods they will out-flow them bigtime, but hedders are still the lightest way to get the power out...
