I\'ve got the 2.8 with the Borg T-5 tranny. I want a TPI 305 with a 700-R4 behind it... Now, has any body switched over from T-5 to the 700-R4????? I\'ll use a floor shifter ofcourse, any thoughts?
Thanks guys, I can\'t wait to get started

Any Gm tansmission will hook up to any Gm small block. That is the beauty of GM.
You will have no problem matching a 700r4 to the TPI 305.
I would suggest though going with the 4L60e out of a wrecked camaro or corvette. The 700r4 robs 30% of your horsepower.

Not hard at all. My truck was a 4.3 5 speed, then 350/350 auto.
You will need to do something with the neutral safety switch. Unless you wanna keep the clutch pedal and push it in every time you start your truck.

What about the linkage for the automatic shifter? will it all fit under the floor? What brand shifter did you use? I will prolly get rid of the clutch and find a way to get around the saftey, is that what you did?
thanks guys, this really helps

Any small block will be great. Any tranny other than the 60 degree v-6 will fit behind the small block. The 60 degree is the 2.8-3.1-or 3.4 V-6. I would run either the 700 or 350. The 4L60E is nothing more than an electronic 700. It will not rob any more power than the 700. The 350 probably takes the least horse power to run and can be built to take quite a few ponies. The cable shifter is the most popular to run and most everything will fit under the floor. Like ZZ4 said,you\'ll have to do something with the netural safety switch. I\'d just push in the clutch swith and wire in the switch that comes with the shifter.
Now get out there and put that V-8 in your truck sir.

hey smittie1984 why do you say that the 700R4 robs 30% of your horsepower?

700s and 4l60s are based on the same type parrts inside and out the 4l60e is quite a bit different as well as having to purchase the computer that will allow the 4l60e to shift.E stands for ELECTONIC SHIFT CONTROL no tv cable for this one,the torque converter is different too it utilizes its lock-up via hydraulic pressure there is no loss in engine power between the two trannies the 4l60e is a bit stronger stock for stock.... http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

I have seen that the Ford 9\" and the 700r4 are the larget horsepower robbers. The ford 9\" takes twice the power to turn than the GM 8.5\". And the 700r4 robs about 30% of your horsepower.
Where I got this info I do not recall. It\'s just some of that info that has become a common knowledge to me. I may of heard it out of a magazine, tv or even word of mouth.
I will do some research to see if I am right. If I am not right I will correct myself. But for now I will stand by what I have said.
I would also like to know how similar (besides electronics) the 2 tranny\'s are. Now if they have the same shell but the guts are completely different I do not consider them the same. That would be like saying a 283 and a 400 small block are the same because they came out of the same block. But I will see what I can find.

considering that all 3 of the trannies have interchangeable internals, not all parts but most,700r4 was a base od that was replaced with the 4l60 with better/stronger internals then on to the 4l60e again with stronger internals,so YES they are still basically the same, now if you had a 2004r then yes they would be way different but the 2004r shares the same internals as a t-350 but with an overdrive....... http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif
