hey guys. i was just wondering if i could get some advice on which tranny to get. I am the one with the 307. I would like to have a muncie 4 speed, but i also know they are not very abundant and also a little pricey. so it looks like i\'m gonna go with an automatic. and i wouldn\'t mind having an overdrive, since this truck is mainly going to be a daily driver. considering all of this, which tranny would you recommend to me? here\'s what i\'m looking for:

-low cost (up to $250)

-strong

-easy to install (as little modifications as possible)

-good performance

-no electronics

-possibly an overdrive (if not, oh well)

If i DID decide to go with a manual transmission, which would you recommend? also, how difficult would this be to add all the necessary components? (it\'s an automatic right now) but right now, it looks like i\'m gonna go with an auto and a hurst quarter stick shifter. thanks for all your help guys! http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

This is only my opion sir...if I were going with the 307 I think I\'d go with the TH-350 and not the overdrive. I know this sounds strange but I had a 305 once and it loved to be buzzed. If I drove it at lower rpm\'s it got worse mileage than if I buzzed it. Those are just my expreinces sir.

Jeff nailed it here. In your price range, the TH350 is about the only choice and it is by far the easiest in a swap. Keep your gears where his are (3.42) and you will get around just fine.

The TH350 is a classic and is about as strong of an auto box you can get. Its biggest down side is lack of OD. Personally I would try to find a 700R4 off an F-body after 1987. Should be good and have OD for good gas mileage.

The TH350 will be cheeper for now but on down the road (sorry) the cost in gas and lack of top end may overcome the cost difference.

The other advantage of using the 700r4 is that your existing driveshaft, tranny mount, and shift linkage will bolt right on. Just be sure you adjust the TV cable correctly. Since you say it already is an automatic. It most likely is a 700r4. Different bolt pattern unless you have a 4.3 engine now. In which case forget the 307. I got my 700r4 from an 89 G20 3/4 ton Chevy van. The reason being it already has a mechanical speedometer and is built fairly heavy duty from the factory. They are not all the same inside. If your truck is one with an electric speedo, then use a Camaro or Fbird tranny. I am running mine, unmodified, behind a 454 with no problems and it has over 150k miles on it. (Knock on wood).
