One night I hit around 7200. Nailed it in 1st, and it bogged. Then recovered, and all hell broke loose. Tires smoked instantly, and i couldn\'t get out of the gas and the clutch in, in time. I need a rev limiter bad.

8400!!! That\'s what the memory on the tach said. 1-2 shift on a back road w/ radials and a one legger. I now have a rev limiter.
all this talk of rpm\'s, i wish i had an answer for this one, i still haven\'t put a tach on mine. one day maybe http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/wtf.gif

the reason i asked this question was i hit 6800 in the rain and didn\'t even have valve float. Not bad for a $500 bottom end. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

i have a question.... how do you know how high to set your rev limiter if you put together a crate engine?

A crate motor is usually a complete motor. Typically, you won\'t \"put together\" a crate motor. It really depends on your internals, what cam you have, valve springs, etc. A little info, and I\'m sure we can tell you how high to turn her.
The majority of Chevy small blocks that are stock are only good to 6000rpm MAX. Those saying 7000+ are either full of it, or have extensive internal engine work done. You have to have the rotating assembly balanced, and preferably a fluid dampner, and the proper valve springs to keep from floating your valves. If your engine is around stock, and you go over say 5500 rpm you will more than likely lose power if you go any higher, so its pointless... unless you want to blow up your engine. RPM\'s are hell on engines that arent built to take it.

I took this post as a, how high did you take your motor by accident, question. Not how high I shift at. I know I f*cked up big when I hit that high. I only take my motor to 6000 rpm.

Hey tawd, i no for a fact that a stock 4 bolt chevy bottom end will hold 7 grand. Just not to many of them. I shift mine at 6500 and thats just because the cam runs out. Bottom end is all stock, stock balancer and everything. I even reused the 30 year old rod bolts. the guy who did my machine work told me to shift at 6800 and i believed that was to high, but now that i did it, i will continue to take it that high. And this shop has a rather respectable reputation for enngine building around here. And the point of this question was for accidental shifts. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

I usually shift mine at 6800, but have chucked the 6AL at 7200 a few times.
I thought some of you ppl were talking about shift points... and yeah, 4 AND 2 bolt mains stockers will go to 6500-7000 rpm. But thats not what they are built for, therefore its deffinately not good for them. Im talking about SAFELY getting to 7000rpm. Hell, blow up your engine, I dont have to pay for the repairs! ha http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif
I HAVE A FASTBURN CRATE 385HP ACCORDING TO GM ITS NOT GOOD PAST 5500 IT DROPS OFF. BUT, YES BY ACCEDENT I DID GET IT UP TO ABOUT 6500 THE TRANNY BLEW LOST OVERDRIVE BAM! IT WAS LIKE I PUT IT IN NUETRAL! DO NOT WANT TO DO THAT TO MUCH.
